Captain Ilniison, hnving returned front a long voyage to find himself a widower, had sacrificed his fondness for a senfnring lifo to tho needs of his only daughter, Lucy, and had settled in a thriving const city, where ho could live comfortably njion tho modest fortune ho hml accuuiuluted. A good man was tho captain, rough in uis ways, bnt tender hearted, irasci ble, lint forgiving, und deeply devoted to his "little girl," hs ho continued to call Lncy even after sho took to long gowns and begun to receive calls from eligiblo young men. It was rather slow in dawning npon the captain s mind that Lncy might somo day like to marry. Ho never took her "company" seriously, for most of tho young men who called and whom he admitted, for he habitually answered tho doorbell, wcro of a typo with which, to put it mildly, ho was not familiar. That Lucy should cherish a genuine in terest in a young man who knew noth ing of tho sea never occurred to him until a son of ono of his former ship mates proposed for Lucy's hand. Then there was a rude awakening. Tho suitor, Jack Darrow, was him self it sailor, and tho old captain hnd found grout comfort in his calls. Iu fact, tho ancient mariner had enter tained tho notion that Jack called to aeo him, and it was quito a shock when Jack, finding the captain ntnno oue evening, mado his purpose clear. "Have yo signaled her, Jack?" he asked. "Haven't hoisted a rag," replied the young sailor sheepishly, "if it's all right, cap. yon speak to her. Sho'll do anything you say." "Dnnno, dunno," returned tho cap tain dubiously, "hut I'll heave tho lead, Jack, and let you know if tho channel's clear." That satisfied Jack, and, truo to his word, the captain "heaved tho lead" that very night. "Lucy," ho said, "Juck Darrov wants to eplico with yo," "Can't be done, papa," sho answered at once. "Jack's a good fellow, but 1 don't lovo him." The captain knew not whethor to ro joico or regret Ho was sorry for Jack, but glad for himself. "All's well," ho said after a mo ment "I'm not asking yo to lovo him, Lncy. You shan't marry anybody ye don't lovo." "I.knew you'd say so, papa, just as I know yon won't object to my marrying tho man I do love." "Eht Steady therel Do yo moan ye'vo got somebody in mind?" Lucy blushed and looked at tho floor. "Who is ho ?" asked the captain anx iously. "It's Henry Whitman, papa, llo-ask- ed mo this evening. "What! Thatdudo?" "Papal" Lucy's eyes blazed as she addressed her father in Bharper tones than bIio had ever used. She looked at him steadily for a moment and then wont to her room. Tho captain drow a long breath, sank into a chair and fumbled for his pipe. Under its soothing influenco bo became comforted. Whitman dressed atyluhly, but that might not bo against him. He conld afford his apparent extravagance. for he was a clerk in a bank. Everybody spoko well of him too. Poor Jack Dar row I After a time tho captain knocked the ashes from his pipe and, goinii to Lncy'a room, spoke to hor through tho closed door. "It's all right, littlogiil," he said in a shaking voice. "If yo want young Whitman, yo shall havo him, and Uod bless ve both. Whereupon Lucy arose, went to tho door, opened it and threw her aruia around her father's neck. Kext day Captain Hanson reported his soundings to Jack and told him plainly that ho'd havo to sheer oil per haps tho captain failed to couch his in formation in terms that suggested his disappointment and kindly feelings. Jack did not manifest his III will then, but a littlo later ho devised a way to wreak vengeance on his successful rivaL Ho chanced to learn that Whit man was to take Lncy to a theater on a certain evening. It began to rain that afternoon, a depressing, ceaseless driz zle. This was Jack's opportunity, and he arranged his plot with great caro. There was nothing ho could do himself except supervise operations, hut ho found three loyal friends to whom he confided the situatit.u and his purpose, and they agreed to look after details. Lucy, recognizing her lover's voice, promptly wont to his relief and caressed hit bruised face in n way that Jack Darrow would not havo liked to boo. Tho cap tain, too, though still my stilled and wrathy. apologized handsomely, and when later the truth about tho con spiracy bocamo known to him he made full amends to Whitman by doing all bo could to hasten tho wedding Chi cago News.
