Detection in tho net of pnrsn ! iut; such investinatinu would bnvp nt the travelers their lives, iu pursuance (as Mohammedans snppiw() tf the law of the prophet. Yonr faithful Mussul man cannot understand that any other motive than worship should lend any one to visit Mecca. The Mohammedans believe thnt this famous stone was brought down from heaven by angels. It is set in the wall of the Caaba, which stands within the great colonnade. The stone is fonr feet nine inches from the ground nnd is kissed aud touched with great vener ation by every pilgrim to Mecca. Mr. Bate mentions what intelligent travelers have recorded concerning the nature of the black stone. One of them tells ns that it Is undoubtedly a large aerolite an opinion which scnivdy harmonizes with its reputed quality of floating iu water, since iu'io!iu.i: ::.;ly contain a huge peirent:ie of !.",.vj metallic matter, such as iron iyt:;e.. Another traveler report.; th.:: it !w:!.s like a piece of lava. eoMcmii ; k.mI1 extraneous particles of some white :a,d yellowish substance. Still another of tuvae niitln'rilii's afiinus that it is a fragment of volcanic basalt, sprinkled throughout ita surface with small, pointed, colored crystals ami varied with felspar upon a dark ground, like coal, excepting one of its prottiber auces, which happens to be a little red dish. Others, again, claiming an equal title to exact knowledge, give it ns their opinion that it is nothing else than an ordinary piece of stone from quarries in which the Meccan territory abounds. These last mentioned travelers, how ever, appear to overlook the circnni stance that this opinion of theirs di -js not tako dno cognizance of thnt proper ty of the stone to which we have just alluded und nlso tho circumstance th::t tho only kind of stone yii lded by the Meccau qnnrries is a sort of gray gran ite. Not so difficult is it to form an idea as to its sizo and present appearance. Iu form it is an irregular oval, the in equality of its two longer sides impart ing to it a somewhat semicircular ap pearance. It measures uliont 11 inches in height and 8 in breadth, the dinuio ter on its lower and wider side being 8 inches. The surface is protuberant and somewhat knobby or nndulating and has tho appearanco of being com posed of a number of sinnllcr sloncB of different sizes and shapes, securely fit ted together with cement and perfectly smooth. Its appearanco ia as though tho orig inal piece of stoflo had been broken to pieces by a violent blow and then re paired. And, as a matter of fact, this appears to bo the true explanation of this irregularity of tho snrfaco, for it is recorded by the Arabian historians of the Caaba that in the year 41 J of the Hajira an emissary of a certain Egyp tian khalifa, known as "the Mad Khali fa Hakim," shattered it to pieces by a stroke of a club, nnd they relate that after this event the pieces nnd even the dnst also were carefully restored and the fragments cemented together. Tho protuberances mentioned are 13 or 15 in number and are such as to Im part to tho surface of the stone a mus cular or pebbly appearance. Near tho middle thero is a hollow which readies to about as much as two inches below the onter edge of the stone nnd is of a kind to snggest to the visitor the snr- miscthat one of tbe protuberances may have been temoved. The color of the surface of tho relic is at the present time a deep reddish brown, or, as somo have described it, a metallic black, and, notwithstanding the polished appearanco imparted to it by the constant touching of unnumber ed mvriads of devotees, it yet bears on its undulating surface what appear to be evident marks of volcanic origin. These muscular protuberances, how ever, are attributed by tho Moslem au thorities to the incessant osculations and rubbings of tho faithful. Tho smoothness may perhaps be attnhntablo to this cause, but tho obviously frac tured and pebbly appearance is not ac counted for in this way. Asiatic Quar terly. Viimra and Their Caa. Louis Wain, the famous cat painter, professes to believe that a cat owned by a woman is the mirror of its mistress temperament. He says that if a cut that has been constantly with its mis tress is suddenly removed from her so ciety tho creature will show tbe char acteristics madaino has displayed. If she has been snappish, pussy will scratch ; if she has been sulky, pissy will snlk too. If this were really true, it would pay a prospective husband to steal the cat of his ladylove before tak ing the fatal matrimonial step. As the cat is about the most independent crea ture alive, one can't help being skep tical of Mr. Wain's theory. A French writer has ascertained that Napoleon's favorite dih was bean salad, and that be held that 60 cenls a day ought to be enough for any one s meals.
