Success has sometimes paused to place a laurel on his brow, And his menial grasp is wonderfully strong, But he cannot hold an audience in a still, ex pectant spell, Though he's been a speaker since he was a lad, As ho did when, in tho cradle long ago, ho couldn't tell A thing we didn't know, but jusb said "Uadl" Washington Star. THE STORM. A sudden galo bud sprung up from tho northeast; great black backed gull aud feeblo winged puffing had been forced alike through tho smoking mists iulaud. Night foil amid tho clash of wind and sen. A narrow track winding round the cliffs led past a cottago; light shono from the windows, and in tho kitchen were threo women. Tho young est lay in a trucklo boil, a baby against her breast ; an old woman, tall, gaunt and white haired, eat at a table, tho Bible before hor, muttering over fundi iar passages with awkward lips; tho third moved softly about tho room pro paring supper. Sho stood a moment by the bed, as the child broke into a long, low wail. "Poor lamb I" she said. "Ho frets as if your breast was cold to him. " "Maybo 'tis cold," replied the sick girl indifferently. "Aye, but not tonight, Nan," tho other protested, "aud his fathor out in a storm liko this. " "The Lord have mercy on the lad," exclaimed tho old woman, glancing up, "ho's got that scamp Kab Tapp wi' him in tho boat. Scores o' times I've told Joss 'twould bo safer to sail 'long o' decent folk. " Nan stirrod uneasily. "Eab's as good as tho rest o' 'em," she muttered, "and a long ways handier. " "Handy wi' his tongue belike, " re torted the old woman, "there ain't his equal for lying in this hero parish. 'Tis only reasonable that tho Lord should be angered ag'in him, though maybo tho Almighty will mind that Joss has been a good sou to mo and sparo tho boat." Sho was silent a moment, listening to tho continuous clamor of tho massivo door bolts that barred back tho storm. "Aye, that ltab, " she burst out fiercely, "they should cast him overboard tho same as tho men o' Joppa cast tho prophet Jonah, sou of Amittai. Who knows but tho Almighty may bo speak ing now by tho voice o' tho wind? 'Cast him out, cast him out, and tho raging waves o' tho sea shall foam upon his shamo. ' " "How daro 'eo speak such words as thorn!" cried the girl, springing up in bed. "Tho Lord ain't no Moloch to do vour men's lives. " "And what's Rab Tapp's lifo to thee?" roplied the other stomly. "It ill becomes a mother with her first chilo at breast to bo taking such thought for furren men's lives." "Come, como, mother," interposed tho third woman, "lot Nan bo. Sup per's on tho table, and you'd feel bottor for a snatch o' sommat. " "I did well to name 'ee Martha," cried the old woman, turning on her. "Your thoughts bo too much taken up wi' the things o' this world. What call have I for bite or sup when tho great starved soa is hungering after my son? Aye, but Joss, lad, lad," she continued to herself, "and you that fond o' whis tling!" . Martha modo no answer, but, pour ing out a cup of tea, brought it to tho sick girl. "Happen 'twill quouch your thirst a bit, Nan," sho said. " 'Taint that kind o' thirst," replied tho other wearily. "Take it all the samo, lass," Martha urged, and tho girl drank. " 'Tis salt as tho sea I" sho exclaimed, pushing the cup from hor with a shud dor. ' ' Seems as if I knowod tho tasto o' drowning. " "And well you may," exclaimed tho old woman, "when your man is forced 60 nigh to it. " "Joss will not bo drowned, " replied her daughter-in-law carelessly. "What for should ho bo drowned? Oh, my God," sho ended, with abrupt change of voice, as the hurrying scream of tho storm wrenched its ' way through tho cottago, "why did yer mako tho sea?" Sho flung herself back in tho bed, and the child began onco moro to cry, but sho paid no hoed to it. "Poor heart, " said Martha, stooping and raising tho baby in her arms, "ho frets ovor things." Sho walked to and fro in tho littlo kitchen, her faco press ed closo against tho child's, her soft brown hair mingling with his soft, downy fluff. "My own chilo," sho con tinued meditatively, "was wonderful contentsomo. " "Your own chilo!" exclaimed tho harsh voiced old woman. "Why, your own chilo was bom dead!" "Hit was never dead to me, " Martha answered gently. "I used to talk a deal to her lying tliero so closo and trustful ag'in my heart. But now I sorter feel that if mo and Jim had another chilo maybo 'twould bo bom dead. " "Ayo, " tho girl answered fiercely, "and ain't mino born dead too?" Tho older woman glanced at her in astonishment. "What nils yon, Nan?" sho exclaimed. ""Why, tho poor lamb is calling for tho breast. 1 ' "I don't hear it call, " tho girl an swered stonily. Martha looked down with sad eyes at tho child on her kneo. "You don't lovo it terriblo teudorsomo," sho said. Tho girl, turning away her head, mado no reply. Without tho storm clamored moro fiercely and tho faces of tho listening women grow while and tenso. "Pray for thorn at sea," exclaimed Martha, glancing at her mother. "And ain't I praying for 'cm?'1 ex postulated tho old wonian passionately. "Say tho word aloud, mother, aud let us join in. " Tho old woman clasped her hands, worn with toil, knotted witli ago, nud sank on her knees. Her thin lips trem bled, but no words broko from them. Wind and sea, as if iu derision at her helplessness, burst into moro hideous combat, and tho thunder heaved its way through thoir clamor with a noiso like tho splitting of mountains. "O God!" sobbed tho woman, "ho wor a good son to me, a good son to mo." Sho was silent a moment, and tho storm without uproared itself against the cliffs, rocking tho cottago in its heavy embraco. "0 God!" sho burst forth again, 'Yo would have spared bottom tor tho sake o ten righ toons men and 'twor a terriblo big and wickod city sparo tho boat causo o' Joss! As sho uttered the last words tho sick girl sprang from the bed and caught the old woman by tho shoulders. "How daro 'eo mind tho Almighty o' Rab's weaknesses at such a timo, " sho cried passionately. "And do you reckon that tho Lord has forgotten 'em?' ' replied tho old wo man in a hard voice "Ain't they all written in tho booko' judgment?" "Tliero bo scores and scores o' folk on tho sea tonight," tho girl answered, "deal wickeder folk than Rab, aud why should tho Almighty bo special took up Wi' he? Oh, 'twas cruel, cruel o' yer to put him In mind o' tho lad. " "Ain't thu names o' all sailor men written on tho tame page, thnt tho Lord may read and choose in tho winking o' au cyo? Martha crossed tho room, shot lack tho great bolts, and a nam, palo faced, drenched and battered, staggered in. Tho old woman gavo an abrupt, keen cry. "My soul" slio exclaimed, and would havo taken him in her arms, but ho put her gently asido and camo to ward tho girl, who stood barefooted on tho cold stouo floor, her long brown hair curling over her coarse nightgown. "Nan," ho crinl, "sweetheart, wom an, wife, God's has given mo back to 'to." "And Rab?" sho said hoarsely. "Tho sea has taken Its toll. Rab's drowned," ho answered.
