R'-seln'.ig Review: Quicks-liver is soon to t.e produced in large tp.i uitities (mm th ; lilack Butle mines in I.aue enmity, about 17 miles sou'lual o Collage Grove. There is a mountain of ore of all degrees of richness, up ti ."ti per cent mercuiy. A contract lias been let for the construction of a 30 ton iltiicksih'or furnace, with condenser, dryer, etc, work on which is lo lie begun immediately. Hie company has ncently built a good wagon road to the mines, bridging several slieauis; has bought a lino farm lor headquar ters, with buildings that will be used as olllces, boarding houses, etc, and every preparation u oeing inane lor working the properly tlie coming season. Tlie importance of this quicksilver properly lies to a considerable extent iu the fact that for several years 'ho production ef tho metal on tho Pacific coast has been steadily tti eliulng on account of the mlues being exhausted Oilier mineral products have increased in volume. The lopoit uf the experts who examined ti e Black Hutle mine say-: "All the Indications f.om present developments warrant the conclusion that the entire mountain is an ini meuse deposit of quicksilver cue, which will produce practically 2 to 3 percent which with the ease and cheapness Willi which it could be worked, makes it one of the most valuable mining nronositions on tho Paeilic coast, if not the w hole world." Tlie properly consists of 1010 acres of land along tlie top of Hint k Untie, hich, rather than an individual butte. Is a spur of tlie Cascade range, and rises to a height of 2700 feet above I the level of the surrounding country. The cinnibar ore, mixed wiih a gaiigue that is a sort of decomposed quartz, crops out along a distance of about 4000 feet near the crest of tho rioge, aim there aro many eligible Bites for fun nels, dumps, inclinis, tracks, ore bins, furnaces, shops, nnd a l the necessary facilities for tho economical extraction of the ore. Six main cuts and two tunnels liavo been made, from which assays were made showing from 3 to 40 per cent quicksilver. Tho cost of re ducing tho ore ia estimated at $1 per tou. The market price of the quick silver Is about 52 cenis a pouud. Some time ago J Behrman, who Is ni'inaeing the work at the mine brought to tlie Chamber of Commerce a collection of mlneial specimens, two largo pieces of rock bearing cinnibar, in one of which Iho proportion is sain to be 40 per cent of tho weight. Yes terday Mr Behrman brought down a vial with nine ounces of quicksilver that ho said ho had reduced from a pound of ore. Tlie Black Butte joining Company i com, nsed ol Seattle and Port Towns- end men, who have been quietly III vestignting the ruerils of their claim", and adding to the extent of their property. Now they aro ready to open up the mini- aim worn u eueigui ically, and it will become an Important industry. It is said that iho cost of ihe production of quicksilver ill Cali fornia is hetw. en 22 to 20 cjnts per pound, wliile the cost of gotting quick, silver from tho lilack Butle mines is estimated at 10 cnts per pound. Is said lo tear Aiauselnttltoll. Chicago, III, March 20. The Chrou Icle'a Washington t-orrespondeut says: President McKinley is almost at the point of collapse. His condition is such that his friends are considerably alarmed about him. At times he seems to be all right, but he has frequent spells of despondency, (luting which he is in a state of nervous terror. He acts like a man shrinking from some invisible danger. When he has one of those mysterious attacks he will not listin to a suggestion of a war with Spain. When he is affected iu this way Mr McICinleyaUo fears assassnatloii. He has developed a superstitioti that Cuba is destined to be free, but that his own fate is In some way involved with the beration of the Island from Span Ish misrule. At his lequcst the force of detective employed at Iho White House and about the grounds has been greatly in creased. Officers Hi uniform are not kept on guard, as was the rule under former administrations, but detective in citizens clothes are employed. About 40 officers are now devoted to the work of guarding the president. The president's frieuds think that his trouble is of a norvous character, and that it has beeti superinduced by loss of sleep aud mental worry result ing from the attention he has given tho Cuban question.
