What do yon want to know forf" l'hil Qrovillo glanced across the dinner table at his young wife somewhat curi ously, and she, meeting his gnzo, shrugged her shoulders withoutansweriug his ques tion. "You needn't sit up for 1110, " her hus band remarked carelessly. "Thank you. I suppose I con please myself !" "You generally do that, and yon know well enough that I never lay down any special laws for you." She looked nt him, with a little smile curving her Hps. "And were you to do 60, do you think 1 should obey tliemf" she asked. "My dear child, I have never given the subject a thought." "Hut do your" she persisted. "Don't bother!" "How very liko a man to avoid answer ing a queatiun by saying 'don't bother!' " she returned, laughing. "And how exceedingly like a woman to plagtio ono with senseless questions!" "You called me a child just now," his wife remarked, rising from her chair nnd reaching across the tnhlo for a box of cig arettes. "May I ask what you are going to do now?" Grevillo asked. "You may ask certrlluly, but I can plcaso myself about answering," she said and proceeded to light 0 cigarette with hor back turned toward him. "Excuso my smoking before you'vo fin ished your dessert," she said as sho blow n whilf of smoke from betweon hor red lips nnd turned and faced him. Ho looked nt her with a puzzled expres sion in his eyes. "Since when have you learned that very charming accomplishment?" ho inquired Barcastically. Hhe drew her pretty brows together per plexedly. "I'm really sorry 1 can't tell you, but I vo forgotten now long ago It is.?' Ho gavoa short limgh and watched her as she daintily illcked the ash off her cig arette, and ho wondered why it did not anger him to seo her smoke, slnco usually ho abhorred to seo a woman do so. It struck him also that had shedono the same thing a few months beforo it would have called down upon her head his wrath ful indignation, but now ho felt totally indifferent as to what sho might choose to do. It mattered to him less than nothing, 6lnco ho was utterly and indescribably tired of her. "You don't object to my smoking, Phil?" his wifo Inquired, watching his faco keenly. "It can't really matter much what I do at least to you." "What a scnslblo remark 1" "The truth Is often that." She threw tho cigarette into the llro and turned and looked at his handsome faco half wistfully. "What a pity it is wo ever got married I" sho cried, with a littlo break In her voice. "What an awful, awful nlty I" Then she ran quickly out of tho room In an exceed ingly undignified manner. l'hil Grevillo looked rather astonished. "I wonder if 6ho meant itf" he solilo quized. "Sho iid it as though she did. And how jolly pretty sho looked smoking that clgnrettol I wonder why sho did It? If she thought it would annoy 1110 sho was mlstakon. All tho same, I hato to seo any woman smoke it's vulgar nnd low, though I'm hanged if she didn't mako the thing look downright well. I bet .llm Taunton would think so. Poor fool! He's desporatoly in love with her. What n thousand nltlos ho didn't marry her! 1 bellevo I wish ho had. Still, if she warn't so confoundedly soft hearted she wouldn't bo half bad, and sho's uncommonly pretty nt times. .1 lm Taunton told mo he thought sho looked ill, but, then, he's so for gone that them's no acoounting for what he docs or says. Poor devil! It must bo rnther hard lines being in lovo with nn othor mnn's wife not that It matters muoh nowadays, for It seems a faahlona bio complaint." Here his reflections censed, ond ho rose and left the room, q'ho sound of his wife's voice, singing an old fashioned song, reached him as ho crossed tho hall, and ho paused lor a rew seconds at tho drawing room door and lis tened. , . , , Ho hardly knew what prompted him to enter tho room, but when the slender, white gowned figure at the piano turned round ho was suiuding by tho fire, looking down at tho glowing embers, ond his wifo's faco Hushed with pleasure as she camo toward him. It was something new for him to Join her after dinner, and her heart gave a glad leap, ond hopo seemed born within her afresh. As sho crossed tho long room, with the soft, subdued light of candles shining on hor fair faco nnd dusky hair, sho madeo picturo beautiful enough to gladden any man's heart, but the time had gone by when her beauty had held Phil Grevillo spelllmund nnd fascinated him as no other woman's loveliness hod power to do. He looked nt her now with even pulses nnd co-il, critical eyes nnd rather wondered why ho had been so mad alMiut her. After all she was not nny better looking than dorens of other women, he argued, and vt how Jim Taunton ravtd alxiut herl But, thi n, Jim wu In love with her, and he- well, he was not. A compla cent smile stole over his face as he po" d. red thus, for he knew how utterly and wholly she worshiped him and was ebao- lot-.y sura of her faltlifalneas. bu not one did tha thought strike hlu of bt cruel neglect, which was killing her l lrobably had it struck htm I.e. o ad have put the thought away as be log too trivial for hit .mart, up to dato He did nut notice, that as she encoun tered his gaie all tha gladness died cut . "Ono doesn't always llko to sav what one thinks," he replied, shrugging his shoulders. "I do bore you, then?" she asked. 'You bore me when you ask ueh n stupid lot of questions." His wife's lips trembled and quivered. "Do you know what people oro sav ing?" she went on slowly. "I hear It wherever I go, though, of course, I'm not supposed to. Shall I tell you what It Is?" "Please yourself." "All right. 1 11 toll you then. It s onlv that you aro tired to death of 1110 and re pent your marriage from the bottom of your heart For once people tell the truth, lion't they?" Sho pushed her hair back from her fore head with a weary littlo gesture, and hor husliand burst Into a boisterous laugh. "Yes, for once people hnve hit tho mark nearly In tho right place," he said, with an angry Bash. "Have you any more In teresting news to tell me before I go?" "Is that Interesting? I should hnve thought it dreadfully stale to vou who have known It so long, and besides It Is such on everyday thing. I hoard some one whisper today that It was 'qulto a com mon ocouiTonco not at all unusual.' " She laughed softly and raised a pair of shining eyes to his. "Let mo have a good look nt von, Phil," sho said, tilting her head slightly to one sldo and regarding his fair, handsome faco with a smile lurking round her mouth. "What a good looking boy you arc!" she whispered, "ovon when you are an gry." Grovlllo made her a mooking bow, but sho only smiled that strango littlo smile ngaln and stood on tiptoe and placed her small houds on his great, broad shoulders. "Good night," sho said. "I know you are longing to go, ond I wouldn't kivp yon against your will for worlds. Good night. And, oh, Phil, I'm awfully sorry I smoked." Sho raised hor iialo littlo face to his, but with a 111 uttered growl ho pushed her roughly away from him. "No, I'm banged If I will kiss you after your romnrks," ho cried scolllngly, and strodo out of the room with quick, angry strides, banging tho door bohind him with considerable gusto. Though Phil Grevlllo's conscience was a very minute ono, It gavo him littlo rest that evening, nnd as ho wended his way homoward a few hours later he had tho good graco to feel rather ashamed of him self. "What a bruto sho must think me!" ho muttered as ho let himself Into tho house, and lndocd, to do him Justice, ho thought himself one also. "It's a pity sho's so tender hearted," ho continued, hanging up his coat, "liccause I'm really awfully fond of her, though 1 was too bad temporal to tell hor so when sho told mo what peoplo were saying." Ho crossed tho hall and noticed a streak of light shining underneath tho drawing room door, and, somewhat surprised, he turned tho handlo and entered tho room. Ho paused on tho threshold, and nil ex olamatlon broke from his Hps, for on one of tho lounges lay his wlfo, apparently In a deep sleep. "Good hoavens! What brings her here at this unearthly hour?" ho murmured and walked across tho room softly and stood looking down at her with a new and unnccountablo tenderness stirring within bis henrt. How fair sho soomed to him in her childish white gown, with ono nrm thrown lightly over her head ond the othor lying onrelossly on tho crimson vel vet cushions how fair and fragllel Her beauty struck him moru forcibly than It had ever before, and ho mentally compared tho puro, high bred face, which looked unnaturally pale in tho dim light, with tho ooarso, painted and liemuged facos he had seen at the musio hall that night. A great wave of rcgrot swept over his soul with overwhelming force. It seemed to striko him how terribly lie had neglect ed her, how cruelly ho hnd treated tho frail, clinging littlo creature, and ho licnt down nnd gently pushed the soft scented hair from her forehead and pressed a rev erent kiss on her smooth, rounded cheek, but ho drew back with a ory of terror. Her faco was cold loy cold ond tho blood seemed to freezo in his veins. He placed a trembling hand over her heart. It wos quito still deadly, horribly still and with a groan of agony he re membered that her mother hod died of heart disease. Ho fell on his knees liesido hor silent form and took hor little cold hands In his warm ones, calling to her In wild accent of despair to speak to him. Jlut tno soitiy parted Hps did not answer, though a smile seemed to hover round them such os one sees on a child's foco when asleep, ond tbe dorkly fringed eyelids did not quiver at bis passionate caresses.
