'His omiiiel Bis UsitnloEss" Vmi bt Kufieue slplulon Mliaunt be Con alileretl The Corvallis Times, cimmentiiig ou the sittiution Into which the Stale University has been brought by the incompetency of Dr Chapman, says: "Squabbles like that at Eugene over tha presidency of the statu university are to be regretted. A man who bus held the position for three years has, in some unexpluiued way incurred tho dislike of Kugcne people, who are out in a popular and vehement objection to his further leleulion in tho pluce as president. There is no use to stop and Inquire why or iu what way this storm of local opposition was provoked. It is enough to know that it is there and that, being there, the usefulness of tho objectionable incumbent is wholly deslroyeii. With a president handicapped by locul unpopularity, the institution itself Is crippled, for (licipiine can only be maintained mir der 1 1 10 iiio-t fuvorubln conditions, nud a school, feeble in discipline, la Impo tent iu all thiugs. As to the people of Eugene, their opposition to the man at the head of the state uuivertsUy Is to be considered. With the rest of the state, aud more than tho rest of the state, they are interested in tho welfare and development of the universsty. Frosts were general tho morning of 9ih, which, In exposed localities, in jured tender vcgetntlon to some ex t.'iit. Wheat, Oats aud Hay. More ralu Is badly needed. The dry w ent her has matuiially atlected the hay crop, es pecially clover and timothy, and (lie correspondents are of the opinion that not over one-half crop will be seen td. ll.iyiug hits commenced, though the showers iu tho northern portion of the district have retarded the work. It cat) safely be cat honied that tho hay crop will be sltoit. Rains, such as aro necessaiy to improve tho late hay, ale not probable, hence no material Im provement can be expected in t lie crop The area of killing frost Is very small. Fall and winter sown oats and when are very promising; without more ruin they will make very good crops, anil with rain tho crops will be excellent. Spring grain of all kinds Is badly In ueed of rain. The showeia were of benefit, but they were not heavy enough. Spring wlteut, iu n favora ble year, yields from 20 to 3'i bushels per acre; but this year, unless most uuusual changes occur, it will not yield over from 10 to 20 bushels. Spring oatH should yield 40 bushels to the acre but If they give 20 bushels this year tho present expectations will bo re alized. Small and Orchard Fruits. Straw berries are about over. II luck berries and raspberries aro ripening rapidly, aud both are full crops. Of cherries the May Duko Is ripe; the Rnyul Anne aud llhtck Kcpuhlicjui are ripen ing rapidly, and before tho current week closes the major portion will be picked and shipped. Somu trees are filled with cherries, while others aro only partially so. The cherry crop, as a whole is good; in some years bettor yields havo been had, ami In otherB much worse. The prune crop now promises to be better llinu was anticipated a few weeks ugo; tho total pruuo product will be, from present appearances, larger than ever before, hut the yield per tree I In some orchards will be less. Tho dropping which has been reported, apieurs to havo censed. The peaoh crop now promises to be very heavy; baud pruning Is In progress. The apple crop promises to bo fair; some varieties have all the treo cull bear; while some aro light. I'tars aro almost the sume as apples. Hops and (Jardens. Hops nre glow ing rupidly. The hop louso has ap peared and spruylng has commenced. The hop prospects aro excellent. Gar dens are doing remarkably well. Po tatoes, peas, beans, caulillower, aud other gurdcti produce, ure plentiful. Corn is making u much better growth than usual. Grapes also promlso a heavy yield. fcAHTKKN OIIKOON. Weather.-Sllghtly wurmer weather bus prevailed during the past week The highest temperature was til degrees on Friday and Suturday; tho lowest 42 degrees, on Thursday, In the Columbia River Valley, and Si degrees over the Pluteuu Region. In the hitter section Injurious frosts were general. Scat tered showers occurred Sunday and today, but they were light. Grain, Hay mid Stock. T hu luck of ruin Is being markedly shown. Full and winter sown grain are head lug, but the grain cannot be plump with out more moisture. Spring wheat and oats are almost ut a stand still, and will not make even good hay without ralu. Tne cloudy weather has been of lienefit, and rsin would make an en tirely new phase upon the conditions. Italn a 11 hi ii two weeks will save the spring-sown crops. The prospects are still good for all grains, but they ure becoming rupidly poorer, Rye Is do ing well and will make a fulr crop; the same for barley. Grasshoppers and squirrels are doing Injury Iu Morrow county, and the farmers there are well nigh discouraged. H. B. I'AOt.'K, Section Director, Portland, Or. STATE ENCAMPMENT. Coiiirmiu K. K.
