B ABTBKN OFFICE-2a0 to 231 Tamnle Court
New York City K. KAl'Z , Agto,
WEDNESDAY,
APRIL 20.
SENATE KEi'KESENTATION.
The Oregonian well says:
"It is neceBsary lo remind the East
once more that, if we have our Ne
vada end Idaho, she alBo has hiir
Delaware and Rhode Inland, It is
past comprehension tliul the East
era newspaper can never upon any
occasion re me in I er thoro are small
states in the East, and slim popn
lations represented by two vote in
tho senate. The sheep ranches of
Montana cast 20,000 more votes in
18 tlniii the ganeouH state of Dela
ware, Maryland will hitvo to
combine its vote with New York's
to equal that of Illinois and Mis
souri. Oregon has more voters
than anv one of the seven Eastern
states of Delewaro, Florida, Mihb
issippi, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island, South Carolina and Ver
mont. All New England did not
oast as many votes, by 200,000, us
the two Western states of Michigan
and Wisconsin."
The East Bhould also remember
that the constitutional convention
thoroughly considered tho matter
of senate representation, and in
order to protoct the smaller states
from being overridden and virtual
ly rendored poworlesi by the votes
of the larger commonwealths, New
York for instance, made the state
itself the basis for representation
in the senate, w hi lo the population
: of the state was made tho basis for
representation in the house of repre
sentatives. That our fathers actod wisely in
thUB apportioning representation
has been oflon proven. With
equnl representation in the senate
tho great states cannot override the
smaller, but mud accord them
equal rights and privileges. The
voice of Oregon 1b as potential in
tbe senato as that of Now York or
Pennsylvania, whilo in the house
of representatives bIio is practically
a nonenity, so far as having any
appreciable controlling Influoiiuo is
concerned. 1
PROl'Elt ATliliKTlC TRAINING.
The Portland Telegram, com
menting on the tendoncy of our
modern oduoatinnal system to car
ry athletio exorcises beyond n le
gitimate point, says the chief end
of oollego inptruotions is not in the
tbe direction of athletio process. No
harm can como from moderate
gymnastic or field practice under a
professor, but matched g.tmos, with
their enforced preliminary training
aro a distraction from the pursuit
of scholarship. Tho moment you
have rival clubs in ditlerent col
leges to contend for mastery you
have business and not play, and a
business wholly antagonistic to
college business. These ore tho
view of overy person who labors
under the impression that boys ore
not sent to college to become ath
lotos. If the Stanford-Berkeley
games had not been declared "oil"'
by the team managers themselve,
it would have boon proper for the
oollego authorities to interfere in
order that the chief aim of college
life might be maintained.
A Portland policetuau doservps a
modal. He hit tho man he shot tt
inrteail of an innocent bystander
as is usually tho result of shooting
on the streets,
A good rain that t.f last night,
though hardly enough. It will
start a many a grain of seed to'
growing. J
The enrolled copy of the state
constitution of Oregon, signed by
the members of the constitutional
convention, is in the handwriting
of Judge W W I'a.e who died the
other day at Portland. That in
strument was adopted forty years
ago, and hut few of the members
who took part in the work now
atand omong the living. It was
very appropriate that the funeral
address over the dead pioueer
should have been delivered by Hon
L F Grover, ex member state con
stitutional convention, ex-con
gressman, ex governor and ex-U S
stmator.
The Oregon City falls of the
Willamette give a water power ol
50,000 horse power. This is nearly
three times greater than that of
Minneapolis; five times that of
Lowell, Mass., or Manchester N II.
But why mention Oregon City
particularly, when Oregon has, in
numerable watur horse power going
to waste on every hand? Oregon
City's advantage lies in her prox
imity to deep water, and the ease
with which the water can be con
trolled on account of solid rock
bottom and hanks.

is'nt ritf.it for mothers
to feci the burden of
life growing heavier

year because of child
uearnig ami emm-renr-itig.
That shows some
thing is wrong in the
motlier'B physical con
dilioii. There is some
unnatural weakness in
her delicate organism
which disqualifies her
for motherhood.
When this ja wrong
everything is wrong.
A woman's physical
life is wrapped up in
the Bpccial organs of
her sex When thes
are restored to health
and strength the whole
woman becomes
healthy and strong. Dr. K. V. Pierce of
HniTulo, N. Y., has made a life-study of this
problem of restoring health atid strength
to women. His " havorite Prescription"
is the most successful remedy that has ever
been known for women's peculiar ailments.
Its sale exceeds the combined Baled of all
othPr medicines for women. It cures the
most obstinate uterine diseases. It goes
directly lo the internal organ iam which is
the real seat of all the troubles. It imparts
vigor and health where they nre most
needed ; heals ulceration ; stops the weak
ening drains ; promotes regularity; restores
muscular power to the ligaments, thus cor
recting displacements of special organs in
the only natural way.
Complete information regarding the "Pa-
vnnte Prescription "and tes
timonials from hundreds who
have used it, arc embodied in
Dr. 1'ierce's Common Sense
Medical Adviser, a standard
medical work of ioo3 pages,
profusely illustrated, which
will be sent free on receipt of
at one-cent stamps to covef
