When it is considered the eub scrintion list and good will of a lirmly ettablished newspaper has cash mar ket value corresponding to its name, age, subscription list and manage ment, our readers will not be surprised that we were somewhat tukeu aback on receipt of the order to "stop the pi per." This would mean the loss of several thousands of dollars to the pro prietors, who for years have munaged tbeUUARD, aud gaiuea ror u, among newspaper men, the reputation of be lne one of the best country propertits lu the state. We speak of this, not in a vaunting spirit, but from a knowledge that the newspaper frater nity of the state will cheerfully render ua that me;d of praise. All this was to be wiped out by the edict of a self coustituted boss, and thut, too.wilhout a cent of compensation. However, on taking time to consider the unpleasant subject, we came to the conclusion that it was intended only to stop the slugle copy that was being delivered to one of our prominent clt izens, Doctor Chapman, who by some inscrutuble dispensation of Providence has been fastened on the State Univer sity with title of president of the faculty. We have ' stopped that copy, but the paper will be publis bed as usual. We suspect all this fuss and flurry on the part of the esteemed Dootor was occasioned by mention of his having ni ployed a Japanese house servant. 1' it was right for the Doctor to take the little brown foreigner into his house hold, there certainly could be no harm la mentioning the fact. If there was we stand ready to apologize to the Doctor for any needless injury to his feelings. He may not have been aware of the prejudice, a just one we believe, that ou this coast, atta dies to the employ ment of Japanese or Chinese laborers We are willing to give him the benefit O! the doubt. But, Doctor, we shall not "stop the paper." Another point, Doctor. We employ considerable labor, but none of the Chinese or Japanese type. The Guard bos in its employ seven regular em. ployees, and also employs occasional extra help. These men are paid their wages in coin every Saturday night, no difference whether the paper has paid expenses or not. If we should- "stop the paper" these men would be thrown out of employment, at leaBt temporarily. No, Doctor, we are here to stay, and shall stay regardless of the approval, or disapproval, of auy of your class of cit izens, who do a great deal oi talking but pay littleor no tuxes, own no property, and have no real iuterest in fie state except to draw an exorbitant salary.
