CUilPUMK.Vr TO JU1M1E PIPES. ills Name Stiirgested for U. 8. Circuit JnUKeof the Oregon District l'artlculai ly Fitness and High Character, A United States circuit judge ship is rendered vacant by the appointment of Judge MoKenna to the cabinet. The name of Hon M L Pipes has been mentioned in connection with the office, and the Oregonian gives him cordial in dorsement, in wh'ch we can hearti ly concur. It says: Since a circuit judge is sought for to fill the vacancy by the ap pointment of Judge MoKenna of California, to the ollic.e of attorney gunorul of the United States, the Oregonian wishes to suggest the name of Martin L Pipes. Judge Pipes is a scholar, a jtiribt and a citizen of high character. A grace ful recognition of men of his Hump would be given by the appointment of Judge Pipes to thin position; and tho public service would gain a man of particular fitness and high chancier. CRIPPLED l'OLiTlCUNH. Bat Will the People Itfitiniiiber Until Next UleeilouS After summarizing the result of the dufunot nt tempted legislature, The Astoria Buduot remarks: Thus die the nineteenth bien nial session of the Oregon legit) lature, which will go down in his tory as a citowMNCi disgrace to many who participated in it. Tho only mombers who have escaped with honor are those who held to the Benson Iioubo and joint con vention. The luiluro (o carry the hold-up through with success will kill many political loaders. Joo Simon is seriously crippled and must give in to Senator Mitchell, Scott has played his lust curd with Simon as a partner. They must separate, lioiirno, the wrecker, is dead as a leader of any party. Young, tho arch traitor in the' Populist camp, who led his followers Into the Si mon ditch, will be oast aside by his party. U'Uon, who had nu ambition to bo Tom Tongue's suc cessor, is irretrievably ruined, and he will be relegated to growing and raising prunes for the bahuico of his lifu iu Clackamas county. Holt and all the big Populist guns have annihilated themselves by contamination with Simon Re publicans. In fact all the hold-ups are no more. It was a big fight, stubbornly fought, kxi-knhive to THK STATE. OKKUOS STATU TAXES. On tho 1143,175,515 of taxable property In tho state, $572,702 will be paid into the stale treasury as taxes. But little of this vat sum can be paid out, on account of failure of the legislature to organize and pass an appropriation bill. Next years taxes will follow suit thus taking over $1,000,000 from tho people and out of circulation. This immeneo contraction of the circulating medium of the state (rill provo detrimental. Some way should be devised to allow the money to remain in the hands of the oounties until needed by the Ute. iThe stale treasurer wll object to retention ot tax money by the counties, as the handling of that immense sum would mean a fortune to him and his bondimon. Yet there Is no justice or common sense in compelling tho countiee to pay money into a state treasury when it cannot be used for one and two years after date of payment. The money should remain in the hanJa of tbo people, else be used by the counties in settling indebt ed uess. The democrats of the recent a' tempted legislature, says the Port lund Dispatch, Senators Smith and Daly, Representatives Bilyeu, Lee and Misener, retained the respect and conGdence of all the faction?, to the hold-up. They were ready to join any ot them to form a con stitutional quorum for the trans action of business. - To Care a Cold in Uue Day. Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tab lets. All druggist refund the money If It fulls to cure. 25c. We predict that John Mayers, the new chief of police of Portland, will make an excellent officer. Perhaps the I "New Woman" will be a stronger wo man than the old one. Certainly, fresh air and the right exercise will do much for her. Fresh air is a great restorative, exercise a great nerve tonic if a woman be in condition to take it. A healthy woman can avoid disease. She can avoid the 7l7ril seemingly almost r(mM inevitable -weak. 1 " proper hygienic methods. The k-o.. sunic uiemuus win 5 not cure her if she be already sick. Taken under medical direction, in con nection with the right medicine, th.-'V will help effect a cure. No women who luff era at all from so-called " female weak ness" should attempt athletics of any tort. She should first put herself into possession of strong and hearty health by bikini Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescriotion. I After she is thoroughly well, exercise and inversion will Help to keep her well. The cure should come first. Dr. Pierce's Fa vorite Prescription is designed and rec Dinmended for only the one thing. It acts directly upon one set of organs. No matter what is the matter with them, it will cure it It will not cure anything else. It is a wholesome tonic, an invig orating nervine, or nerve-food as well as healing medicine, and thousands of perfectly well women have found that by taking it regularly during the period of pregnancy, the danger aud pain of par turition were much lessened, and in many coses, almost entirely obviated. In every Amerlcnn household, there should he 1 copy of Dr. Pierce's great work, "Common Bensc Medical Adviser," looS pages, illustrated. It therefore escapes the fate of papers that depend for a show of success upon these extraneous inducements, which are to lie pitched into the street or thrown into the waste basket as soon as the coupon is cat from their columns. THE GUARD, on the other hand, goes regti larly and permanently into 80 per cent of the homes of Eugene solely and entirely tn its merits as a bright, ckan, enterprising, progressive and comprehensive newspaper. It is delivered at an hour, moreover, when tho household harj both time and inclination to read, and it IS read thoroughly and carefully by every member of tho family. These conditions insure for every class of business announce ments not only the widest but the best publicity that can be secured in our city. &uenirag (Reared Guarantees advertisers that it reaches more people than any other paper published in Eugene, and therefore has better results.
