The following cigarette bill was in
troduced by request by Senator Johu
son: "Seotlon 1. It shall hereafter be un
lawful In this state to manufacture, or
cause to be manufactured, or to sell,
barter, trade, or in auy manner furn
ish or dispose of, or to have In possess
ion for the purpose of sale, cigarettes,
cigarette tobacco, or cigarette paper In
any form in the state of Oregon.
'Section 2. Auy person violating
any of the provisions or tills act shall
be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor,
and upon conviction thereof shall be
punished by a line of not less than
$100, nor more than $500.
"Section 3. Justices of the peace
shall have concurrent Jurisdiction with
the circuit courts for all offense aris
ing under this act.' " The bill carries
an emergency clause, which an ex
change says will mean Its defeat, as
nlue out of ten bills with emergency
clauses fall to pass. The bill though is
good enough one. The cigarette can
not be set down on too hard.

The northbound overland train was
held up at the Sheridan deld.about one
mije and one-half south of Roseburg
lost night atabout 11:45 o'clock. The
place seleoted was an Ideal oue for a
train robbery the mountains closing
ueorly together at the point, muking
the canyon quite narrow, thus per
mitting the robbers to escape with
ease. The night was also a perfeot
oue for the business, being extremely
dark and a light rain falling. It ap
pears that at Myrtle Point the drat
station south of the hold up two of the
robbers got on the blind uoggage.
When the point selected for the rob
bery was reached the engineer was
iiaort and immediately t'.e two
robbers on the blind baggage crawled
on the lender and covered him wilh

train. Bv some meaus, the flremau
slid off the engine and started to Rose
burg to give the alarm, running most
of the way. The robbers knowing
he hod escaped made haste to do their
dastardly work. The express messen
ger was cominauded to open the doors
to his car but he refused. 1 lien tney
commenced exploding dynamite
bombs. At the first one the messenger
retreated through to the day coaches
shooting at the robbers a couple of
times without effect. The highway
men then attempted to blow up the
safes. The smaller one, used for way
statious was blown U) pieces but
the largo through safe stood the ordeal
thus preventing them from obtaining
tha much prized reward for their

oar caught on tiro. Then the robbers
entered the mall car and took the strap
lock registered mail pouch, carrying It
away with them. The passengers
were uot molested.
It looked fur a time as if the entire
train would be consumed by Ore, but
by hard work ouly the express car was
burned, It beiug totally so, including
all the baggage and express matter.
The rear end of the mall oar was con
siderably burned, and it Is said that
one of the highwaymen helped ex' In.
guish the fire Iu this car.

amount procured by the train robbers
would not exceed $20.

was plainly heard in Roseburg.
