Which is whioh? The newly created speaker was elected on the opinion of Senator Geo. F. Hoar, of Massachusetts, who said: "I think two-thirds of the num ber actually qualified make a good constitutional quorum. If only 35 qualify, thoy may lawfully or ganize and do business. The same question and prinoiplo were settled in tho national house and senate in the time of tho rebellion." Hon. Geo, H. Williams, of Port land, ex-U, 8. Attornoy General and ex-U. S. Pendleton Tribuno: The only thing that keeps Salem from being as great a jackass markot as Kan sas City is a mule markot, is that there is no domand for jackasses. Kx-Stato Senator Matlock, of Umatilla county, has been down to Salem observing the senato rial contest, and expresses the bo lief that if a senator is elected it will not bo Mitcholl. With an expense of leas than $5 Alva Adams, elected as a democrat, was inaugurated governor of Color ado a few days ago. He walked to thecapitol whore the oath of office was administered by a supreme court justice without fuss or feath ers. His inaugural address was short and to the point, the governor giving the impression in its dcliv ery that performance was better than promises. In the course of his speech he said: "The East and the West need each other, tut the West, especially Colorado, with all its diversified resources, can stand alone with less loss than any other section. Around our state might be circled Jefferson's sea of flame or John Adams' wall of brass, yet we could grow, prosper and be hap py; but we want no seclusion; we have a sincere and ardent welcome for all tho world." It did not officially notify the senate of Its action yesterday in organizing. Tills is considered strange. The Benson faction adjourned until 11:30 o'clock next Monday forenoon. A number of assistant sergeaot al arms were appointed by Benson, who attempted to prevent Speaker Davis from assuming the chair, but they failed. The temporary organization, presid ed over by Speaker Davis will meet from day to day, the same as hereto, fore.
