EAHTKKX OFFICE 2J0 to ZH Temple Court,
New York City. K. KAI,AeaL
THURSDAY, - JANUARY 21,
A bill is before congross fixing
the lermsof all postmasters at four
years.
lioisa Penrose, the new U S Sen
ator of Pennsylvania, who downed
John Wannamaker, is only 30 years
of age.
Speaker Davis of the lower house
was elected as a temporary officer
but it seems he has become quite
permanent.
It is stated that the falling off in
the demand for cigars in the United
States this year amounts to $7,000,
000 and the loss is largely credited
to cycling.
Ocosta, Wasnington, is establish
ing quite an industry in shipping
clams and crabs, which are found in
abundance on the ocean beach and
along the tide flats. A factory to
manufacture concentrated soups
and other products of the clam is
talked of.
Baker City Democrat: "A gen
tleman just home from Salom says
that Jonathan Bourne it ovordoing
liiimolf. That he is feeding and
wining the cow county members in
n manner they are not accustomed
to, and that within two weeks the
whole lot will bo laid up with the
gout."
The Now York City Sun, which
is very good authority, declares
that President MoKinley will Bp
. point no applicant to office unless
hi 4as the endorsement of tho con
gressman from the district in
which the office applied fur Is lo
cated. This was the plan followed
by president Arthur.
The full text of Senator Daw-
ion' bill providing for semi-annual
payment of s'tate taxes by the sev
eral county treasurers is as follows:
"Boo 2S13. On or before the first
Monday of April in each year, the
several county treasurers in the
tale shall pay over to tho state
treasurer, in gold and silver coin,
one-half of the state taxes charged
to their respective counties, and on
or before the first Monday of Ovto
ber thereafter they shall pay over
the remainder of said taxes,"
Salem Statesman: Representa
tive Yaughan of Lane is the good
na tu red father of the houso. He
may not be so great a parliamen
tarian as some of the managers of
the floor but hi can roe a point
about as quick. He will favor the
re-enactment of the mortgage tax
law with tho deductions for in
debtedness where tho correspond
ing credit is taxed. Mr Yaughan
will introduce a bill regulating tho
running at large of stuck, except in
certain sections where there is good
range and nothing fjr the stock to
Injure. He will also seek to secure
the passage ol an act to reduce the
legal tate of interest in Oregon to
0 and 8 per cent. A bill was given
him to introduce placing the rati
at 6 and C, but Mr Yjuglmn thinks
it would stand no show for becom
ing a law. He hope to strike Ihe
happy medium.
i
Republican paperi throughout
the slate arc claiming that the

year more of useless commissions,1
high salaries and other extrava-j

'stead, more burdens were placed ;

I ably add to the burdens of the peo-,
j pie of the state, rather than relieve i
i them. And right here it is in order j
to state that the "commissions,
salaries and damnable laws" that j
(iTinnt.l I,a renealcil are the hnndi-

work of the past three legislatures i
which were composed nearly unani
mously of republicans. Is it like
ly that reform measures can be ex
pected from that party or Senators
who have on an average from two
to three cierks each?
