The populiat memberi of the legislature have issued the follow ing to the people's party in the state: "The undersigned, your members-elect to the legislature, ask your loyal support and that of all good citizens in our contest for such an organization of the bouse as we believe will result in econom ical and remedial legislation, that will make an honest vote and fair count possible in Oregon. We are contesting for a fair organization of the bouse, in order to make possi ble the passage of the Bingham registration bill, the Ilol.tjudfes-of-eloclion bill, and an amendment to the constitution providing for the direct law-making by the peoplo by means of the initative and referen dum in its optional form. "We are assured by eminont law yers that the Bingham registration bill is constitutional, and likely to be effective. Tlio Holt bill allows the county central committees of each of the three principal political parties to eaoli name ono clerk of election In each precinct. The ini tiative and roferondum need no ex planation to Oregon populists. These measures we believe to be all important in obtaining honest elections and control by the peo ple of law-making in Oregon, and thereby preserving our liberties. The situation is this: "Last June the republican party elected 33 members of the house of representatives. Only 28 of this number have agreed to act together in organizing the houso. Part of tho remaining 10 republican mem bers support Mr Bourne and part do not support any oiudidate. The populist and democrat members , are staying out until such time as a republican majority may agree upon a candidate of its own for speaker,, or until a sufficient number of them unite with us to assure Bourne's election, which we believe will enable us to obtain the measures herein named. As long as republicans nre thus divided, and it Is possible that we m7i by preventing organization, fianally elect Mr Bourne, and prob ably obtain the legislation before mentioned, we feel it to be our di'ty to the people of Oregon to stay out wages or no wages. With this knowledge of the factd, we fool that we are entitled to your sup port for oursolves and our allied." From one of the tables of the new World Almanac it appears that in 1S97 there will b; six state electione, the first in Rhode Island on April 7, too early to be of much value in showing the drift of po litical sentiment. The five others are in the fall. On November 2, Massachusetts, Ohio, Iowa aud Virginia, representing in a way important sections of the union, hold elections for all state officers, and on November 8, New York electa a judge of the court of ap peals and members, of the assembly. A most en trancing program has been prepared for those two evening, and the citizeus of Eugene will miss a treat if they fail to attend these services. The Kin tograph will reproduce some of the best songs and instrumental solos of our most noted singers and musicians, as clearly and distinctly as though they were present personally.
