A fail ure to organize on the first day would, under the law, postpone the first ballot for senator one week. There is a proposition to increase the salary of members to congress t) 7,500 for members, and $10,' 000 lor speaker of the bouse. The plea is that a salary of 15,000 is not sufficient to enable them to take their families to Washington t live. The next move will be, after they have served a half dozen terms, to give them a pension and .a fine mansion In Washington aa a permanent residence. The International Typographi cal Uuion lost a staunch friend when "Joe" McCullaugh died. It was McCullaugh who instituted the "grasshopper oases" away back in the old days of hand composi tion. The "grasshopper cases" were put up for the benefit of the tourist printers. At any hour of the day or night the union printer out of work could go to the Olobe-Oemo- orat office aud work on .those cases until he bad earned f 1. The miners work but eight hours per day, and their pay it $3.50, while the work of common laborers is $3.00 per day, and everybody has employment, that is everybody who belongs to the union. The mines are almost exclusively cop per, and the beauty of the arrange' ments are, that a man with a wag on load, or the man with a train load of ore, can, as soon as the pro duct is delivered at the works, get spot cash for rhat he chooses to sell. Butte is a city of 30,000, and in probably the most thriving city of its size in the wide, wide, world. legislative Pointers.
