Guard of the great haste a newly
married Jasperite was making to be
freed from the bonds of matriii'ony,
an old pioneer is reminded of a olr
cumstauce that occurred here in Ore
gon in the early '60s. At that lime
divorces were procured through an act
of the legislature. Then, as now, "mar
riage was a failure" with' some at
least. A farmer applied to the mem
ber of his district to secure for him a
divorce, but Just previous to the bill
being presented the following letter
was sent to the member:
"Long Tom, Lane Co. Oregon .
Territory, Jan. 19, 1856.
Dear Sir: My old woman's come
home and I find her all right, aud I
don't want nary divorce.
John Smith."
