Ykk- Juauuiu Hitler's I'lieiaiilsv The Oakland, Cal Times in a recent Issue says: Joaquin Miller's lote-t benefaction la thttstooklug of Alutneda county with, birds. Now there are birds and birds; some slug better llion others and some are good eating, while others do not amount to much iu the eyes of tbe gourmet. Mr. Miller has resolved these thing in his mind, Ciiniilili'lo'"'"' 1 ou" Sept 0. In Ihe matter of the petition of W J Hillings for road of public easement. At this time this mailer came on lobe heard on the above petition and It was ordered by tho court that OrviHe Green, O A McMalian and Martin Reese be and they are hereby appoint ed lo view said proposed road and tue aujueuiik and he has resolved that the Chinese, whloh would be oo- pheasauls Is the most desirable 'r j ,,(1 0y the opening of said road. to propogate, all things couslilereu. As a songster lie does not much excel the common barnyard hen, but his eating qualities are unexcelled. The pheasant experiment is well under way. Georgo M Miller of Eugene, Oregon, who is a brother of the poet, has shipped seventeen pheasants to the poet, who will free them ou his farm upon Oakland Heights, (Oakland Hlghts, according to the poet's own way of spelling). It is not to be sup posed that the birds will remain per manently uon the poet's ranch, even to enjoy the society of the man nl verses; they will wauder away become widely scattered, snd eventually peo ple Alameda and Contra Cosla coun ties. That is, If tho hunters do not kill them off before they are given a chance. It is Interesting to know how the pheasants were secured. The birds ere about half grown and a simple but eflectivo method was practiced In their capture. They were run down by a man on a horse. It Is said when frightened the young birds will rise and fly to the greatest distance their strength will curry them. They must then rest quite a bit before regaining sufllcient strength to fly again. If spotted" by a man on horseback he can pursue them at full speed, and by Jumping off his horse, catch themos they will not try to fly until they have rested. Address Befohr Y H and Y W C A. The Wagon Road. Brownsville Times: Several petitions are being cir culated over the couulry, for tho pu;- pose of securing funds Willi which to build tbe much-talkcd-of, long-looked for wagon road to the mines. The one bjlng circulated here is not being received with the liberal spirit that it should be. Our people who are wide awake on most occasions, evidently do not look at this matter from tho proper standpoint. They did not seem to realir.o that Willi the completion of this road Brownsville and Linn county would receive the trade that will other wise go elsewhere. This trade, even at present, Is not merely a trifle, and yet it will Increaso ten fold, In all probability, in a very short time. Let us lie up and doing: this is our golden opportunity; the iron is hot, hit hard. A Surprise. The ; Misses; Fannie and Maggie Croner and Mrs George Croner gave their nmther Mrs C C Croner, a most delightful surprise par ty Saturday night. Whist was in dulged In until 10.30 when all the guests repaired to the dining room where covers were laid for slxeccn. The table was elegantly and and ar tistically decorated with snilhix and various kinds of roses. After the beau tiful repast all sorts of games were played until a very lato hour, when all the guesls, wishing Mrs Cron er many happy returns of her natal day, departed for their respective homes. 2 10 2 10 10 2 10 2 13 Fined for Selling Pheasants.
