A BANKER'S VIEWS. Tlio following communication appeared recently in the Oregon City Courier, written by lion. C. I). Latouretto, a banker and'leading attornoy of that place. It is worthy of a careful consideration, espec ially by democrats. He says: "There is somthing inexpressibly ludicrous in the mannor in which the Orcgonian administers the Gold faith oure to prominent democrats, and then when they are fairly under its hypnotio influonce, gets them to speak out in meeting, to repudiate something or somebody. "In regard to the great Gnancial question that now agitates the peo ple, democrats, regardless of indi vidual opinions, should siring into line and support their party. The United States is a great silver pro ducing country, and every true Amorioan, having the prosperity of bis country at heart cannot object to proposed legislation which will tend to increaso the production and enlarge the uso of this groat Amer ican product. "But the Orcgonian says that free coinage willdostroy the parity, would drive gold a (ray, and by contraction, would cause universal ruin, etc. Porhaps so; perhaps not. I oannot see that there would be danger in an honest attorn pt to romonotize silver. Of course wo must not have a radical and sud den ohango in our financial policy. But that should not provent us from endeavoring to find some ex pedient, some compromise, some tnlddlo ground that would favor an increased demand and use of silver especially American silver. Gold might just as well bo sont abroad as to bo looked up in the dark vaults at monoy centers of tho East, so far as the good it does us.hore In the West, and if we can not get gold but by fiving Interest bearing bonds and mortgages for . it, we better let it alono. "For one I am getting tired of the Orogouian'a protracted calamity bowl. It is time that all this twaddle be silenced and these foars bo quieted. I am not much of a believer in tho prinoiple of prosperity being brought about by any species of legislation. I think it about ti me that the Amer ican people should begin to woik the vast natural resources of their own country, thereby creating wealth, instead ol trying to scheme themselves rich by aircaatlo build ing upon lorrowed capital. But legislation, if any, should not be altogether against ourselves and in favor of the old world. "The denioeratio party, by its platform and nominees, has shown itself friendly to silver. The re publican party has declared its emnity to silver. Thoro are but two sides to this question and if I may be permitted to diragree with our 'Great Daily,1 let me suggest to weak knoHl brother democrats, that we all line up in support of the party that has always professed to stand, and which now stands fear lessly for the welfare of the com mon people of this country. It is folly for any one to say that the democratio party will put through any radical measure that would disrupt business or endanger enter prise. The party la purposing to do what can be done to relieve a debt ridden neonle who hava luwn sweating veritable drop? of blood, I in order to carry a load of debt that has almost crushed them to the earth. Should it not be com' mended and supported? "Let us trust tho modern deuioa racy, as led by the great young commoner from the central West. Do not make the subtle influence of the Orcgonian make you stultify your political principles. Unite the forces; close up the broken lines and let us all join in the shout for 'Bryan and bimetallism." McKinley is a Methodist in re ligion and Bryan is a Presbyterian Both are good clean men in their private lives. Albert Tozier, socretary of the Oregon Press association, and a warm friend of ye editor, has been appointed health officer of the city of Portland by Mayor Pennoyer. The appointment is one that will be commended by every one who knows tho gonial gentleman. He will fill the oflioo honestly and with favi r to no one. The Guard congratulates Mr Tozier upon bis success.
