J Fra.ior assist ant secretary of the Kugene Speed and Driving Association, states that 27 head of pacers and trotters would leave that city Saturday morning for Eugone and would be in attendance upon the races uext week at Meriau's park. l'se mauagemeut at Portland have chattered a river steamer and will bring tho horses up on It. The boat will probably arrive here uext Mon- lay. Besides the pacers and trotters there are also a few runners in the band. It now looks us If the races would bo an assured success. There, are already u large number of horses in training ut tho park track and ut Harris' track, mid it Is quite ptobnble that ut least 100 horses will be In attendance upon the races. One tiling Is certain and that is there will be the finest display of bono tlesh that has ever been seen before In I.ano county. Every race for which there Is a purs 'odered will bo wt II tilled, and there will bo some exciting races take place at the park next week. Unfair as Usual. A.C.Jennings, who is the so-called clerk of Lane county. Is probably possessed of more gall aud egotism than any like odlcer in tho Culled Slates. He sent a communication to title nfllce shortly before noon yester- lay and because it did not appear at 4 o'clock, iutimutes that It had been taken under advisement, and pro ceeds to havo it published In the Register; and therefore it will not ap pear ill this paper although It was in tended to bo printed in tmlu 's IIuaru and In the weekly tomorrow. Many times a man must wait for two or tli reo weeks tor a deed to be recorded lu the clerk's olllee under tho present rcgimeoud lie thinks nothing ol It, although he has a house full of depu ties paid for illegally by the county, and still ho expects a newspupcr (o publish all article nt his beck and cull in throe or four hours after its receipt, that requires double the work of a deod, etc. Now for the article: F'lrst Ho says tho average assess ment of railroad mlleago lu tho state is 1,1)78. Tills Is true, but the road bed Is mortgaged for $20,000 per mile, and In California similar roads are assessed for from $12,000 to $17,000 per mile. Assessor Burton assessed tho road bed at $5,000 per mile and thought he was planing the value very low. Why should the county clerk net as special pleader for the S P It R, a monster corporation? Does he know more about the value of the proporty than Mr. Burton? Jennings has never shown such Interest when It camo to loworiug assessments on the farms of tho county. He Is a sham reformer and works for the H P II II. Why? Second He baa tho gall to claim some credit becauso the assessment of the railroad was luoroased over the previous year. It was not Jennings' fault that I was nut less. He reduced a portion of the same, aud probably would have the rest If he had becu assessing tho property. The assessor. and not the sham reformer, raised Hi valuation. Third Became the clerk's office lias paid a few dollars profit In the lust 21 mouths Jennings claims tho credit for it Ho Is possessed of more assurance than any Individual In the county. He is' not responsible that it did pay a prodt as ho has right along pocketed fees that by right should have boon demanded by the county, lis never passed the law making It a salary ouo. Ah we slated before tho clork's office has cost the taxpayers $4,048.60, and we defy a denial. Ho then makes a comparison with llio old law. It makes no difference now as to the old law. That was voted out of existence by an Indignant people and the sanio voters should forever dispose of the sham reformer on June 1st. Then the entire Jennings family might earn $30 or $4 per month Instead o( $200 or $100 as now quartered. Vote for Spencer. Imi'Rovkjiknth. A new tin roof Is being put on A K Patterson's building on Ninth street today. A number of other Improvements are being made In that vicinity. Tho alley back of the HofTmaa Houso Is being cleaned out sud filled In with gravel and a mi m lr of old shacks along the alley are being turn out. This I the propor thing to do and If some other localities should receive the same treatment It would be better for the health of the city. HIKD PltOPAtlATISti. Mongolian, Silver and Uoldeu l'lioui nuts and Canary Birds, E J McClaiiahan has made ratherex tensive preparations for the propaga tion of Chinese pheasants nt his prem ises lu the eii'toin part of tho city. Mr MeClaunhaii has been dialing in those birds for some time and constant ly receives applications lor thorn for porpagatlng purposes from dlflerent parts of tho I'uited States. He can not begin to supply the demand, though he ships several hundred of tho birds every season. Heretofore Mr MoClumthaii has dc elided upou cnpturlng tho birds In their wild state, but this spring he has constructed a small park 20x100 feet III size, at his premises on Ferry street, in which he will keep three pairs for breeding pur poses. Tho birds hero can have all the freedom that can be given them under conllnement. Tho park has a wall around It which Is seven feet and two luohos high and Is covered with oommoii wire netting. Tho birds are supplied willi plenty of water and grain, and grass and shrubs uro growing In the park. There uro now two males and ouo female in the park. At the east end there is a small glass window in tho wall, over which hangs a leather llap. This window is for the purpose of viewing the interior of tho park, and to describe tho wonderful alortness and watohfulluess of the birds it is only necessary to say that the little leather Hup ov.r the glass il never raised without them being con scious of it. Mr MaClunuhan has anotlior smaller park In which he has a domestic hell with a brood of 10 young pheasants that were Just hutched out tills morn lug. He also has another lien setting on 20 eggs. Mr McChiiialian has written to some purtlos at Protection Island ou Puget Sound to ascertain If ho can get a pair eacli of Sliver and (lolden pheas ants. If It Is possible to obtain these birds Mr McChiiialian oxpects to Im port tlieiu for propagating purposes. They are very rare and bentlful birds. Besides pheasants Mr McClaiiahan Is also dealing extensively lu canary birds and now has 20 of tho littls yel low beau the In a cayo in his yard, hreo ef them being Ojruinn L Inneta, said to be the flnost of singers. Ia the cage are six ucsts, containing altogether 10 eggs. Tho cago and Its precious occiiiuuts make a very pretty picture, and when visited by a reporter threo of the little songsters were vory oontoutedly and good naturedly setting ou one nest.
