When Nye was appointed post maater at Laramie by Firnt Aesiat ant Postirmnter General Hutton lie wrote a letter to that nfTieiul con gratulating the nation upon the wiisdom that had led to his (Nye's) appointment; but when a year or two after, ill-health having driven him away from Laramie, he was forced to resign, his letter of resignation was perhaps the most unique documont that has ever passed into the national archives. He explained how the safe combination was set, also how to make the office stove draw, and gavesome valuable information as to who should be trusted to box rents, stamps, etc., and gave some charac teristics of the office cat. Also, during the courso of the report, lie took occasion to remark: "There is some mining stock in my private drawor in the safe which I have not removed. Tho stock you may liavo if you desire it. It is a luxury, but ycv.i may ' havo it. I have decided to l:eep a horso instead of this stock. The horse may not bo so pretty, but it will cost less to keep him." A (errifio wavo of heat paBsed over Australia in January. Fir two woeks the temperature was not under 90 degrees and as bili as 122 in the shade.. Horaes dr ipped doad on the streets of theciticn and In tho agricultural districts horses, cattle and sheep died by hundreds in the fields. Many big brush fires occured as a diroct result of tho great heat. llo is now submissive. A recal citrant husband, named Win. Sho tied him by his thumbs to a hitching post, and belabored him with a blacksnaku until he was dooilo and obedient as a kitten. Klio is spending tho money now. President Harper, of the univer sity of Chicago, is said to be plan ning tho creation of a great rollego of mueio in connection with the institution, the scope of the affair including the erection of a temple to cost 1500,000, which is to he tho home of tho greatest musical con nervatory in tho world. It is esti mated that Dr. Harper is trying to Induce Paderewski to become tho head of the institution, and witli that oiul in view he has arranged for a public reception on March 13, at which tho great pianist will bo tho guest of honor. Jacksonville Times: "This part of Oreg.m, whioh is considerably interested in tho withdrawal of the Cascade limber belt from settle ment, will bo surprised to learn that tho State Hoard of Land Com missioners protest agaiiidt the opening of tho greater portion of tho Cascade reserve (o settlement. Tho President's proclamation was entirely too sweeping, and will prove detrimental to public inter ests in more ways than ono" We can hardly hel ievo that Governor Lord, Hon. II. R. Kincaid and Mr. Irwin, tho land coiuniissi'!irs would liitorjKisc tlicir olijeotioiu lo ) just relief to our people, I Western people watched with in teres t the coupon voting contest of the Record some months ago when silver sentiment scored a big victory over gold in Chicago. By the Record's figures there were two to one of Chicago's voters in favor of hinietaliaui. A canvass of South Rend, lad., by a correspond ent showed 180 in a total of 215 business men to be in favor of silver. In fact, every time the Record has published anything to show sentiment, silver has ecored a winning. Now, in view of these facts, what basis is there then for tho direct and implied asser tions in the Record and other papers that "the silver issue is dead everywhere except in the mining states." How can we reconcile actual figures in favor of silver and the random hut emphatic slate mcnts that the silver fn;ht is over and paBt? If silver is dead, how can we account for the Chicago vote, the South Rend record, etc.? If it is not dead, upon what founda tion do the requiem editorials rest? The west would like to know which is correct, the figures or the assertion. Kastern Ex.
