factory at noon today to disperse about
a dozen tramps, who were burning up

for Astoria. Work there though is
proceeding on the railroad the same as
if he wore present. The following in
reference to his backing is of interest
in connection with the O C & E: An
Astoria man said that he bad heard
several rumors to tho effect that Mr
Hammond's present visit to New
York was for the purposo of raising
money for the construction of the Hue.
"This," he said, "I happen personally
to be in a position to refute, because I
know that before Mr Hammond en
tered into the contract he had all the
money, and more than he needed. He
has any quantity of funds at his dis
posal."
