Salem is talking of rebuilding the woolen mill. The report of the assassination of the sultan of Turkey is not con firmed. His life however is in constant dancer. That is a horrible murder per petrated near Brownsvillo. And the horror of the deed is intensi fied by the strong suspicion that the son deliberately murdered bin father and mother. Iloports from San Francisco con corning the rate war between the Southern Pacific and O It & N companies are that tho latter was handling 70 per cent of the travel while tho former claimed it was entitled to CO per cent. Each claims it was willing to divide trafiio equally, but it apponrs no compromise could bo effected. In consequonce of the cut in rates COO people loft Portland for San Fran cisco Tuesday evening. Adventist cranks again foresee signs of the end of the world. They claim that the Turkish em pire corresponds to that mentioned in the ninth chapter of Revela tions, and tho great battle of Arma geddon will soon be fought. One would naturally suppose adventist would somolime or othor get weary of prophesying the dire catastrophe to this venerablo worid. But, they do not. After each failure they come up to the scratch, smiling, with another date. Barney Barnato, the biggest man in London today, has just made a Btartling revelation. In an ad vertisement of a recont meeting of tho directors of the Now Primrose Company, one that Barnoy claims to be second to none among the South African properties, the November returns are $85,000. Considering that the captaliza tion of this company is if 1,250,000, it will be readily seon that it shows but very poorly wlion compared to a hundred or more proportios in Colorado, Montana and California. The $15,000,000 that Barney, a few days ago, placod in the hands of London brokers to avert the inevi table pin from pricking tho bubble of this gigantio milling boom, will oithor require an additional sum or the end must necessarily come. Englishmen Bcom to have lost their hoads. Every one of them is crazy to invest in South African schemes. It will all end liko the South Sea bubble Tho bottom will certainly fall out and it will end in a panic. Great houses will tottor and thousands will see their fortunos wrecked. Whon that day comes ovorybody will curse Bar nato, and he will leave Encland followed by just such a storm of nbuso as pursued John Law in his flight from Franco after the col lapse of bin Mississippi Boheme. Tho avoragt Englishman will do well to lot Barney alone and bo satisfied with surer gains, which are the reward of well directed efforts in legitimate enterprises. Fortunes of two or threo hundred millions will not come to many of the money devil's worshippers. Once in a generation or so, such a freak of luck comes to somo glut toring speculator, and thoso who follow in his footsteps find only ruin and poverty. Where ono may got rich in speculation, thousands loso their last dollar. The street committee is doing good work keeping the crosswalks clean. When you see a young limn n itl a mop of hair parted in the middle, with locks hanging on the temples put him down as a football crank or a dude. In many such cases their sexuality is a serious mis take. Bohemia miningdistrict is boom ing. Four mills have already been taken in and the fifth is on the road. These mills are of the latest construction and will soon demon strato what the future of the mining camp will be. The current quotation on silver means little or nothing, smelters have contracted for the'r bullion for months to come to the big agen cies in New York and many of these in turn have sold to London. The market will no doubt be steady at or near the present price until these contracts are filled. Then it may go higher, and it may not. Town Topics: Mrs Gayboy Do you lelieve in second marriages? Mrs Oollghtly Well, I suppose they are necessary in order to have a third or a fourth. LOOK OUT FOR BREAKERS AHEAD when pimples, eruptions, bolls, and like manifes tations of impure blood appear.
