A gentleman who has lately made an extended trip turough Gilliam aud Wasco counties, where be is interested in stock, says the people there are preparing for a cold, snowy winter. The rain of September 15, started up the grass, on the range, so that the sheep are in fine condition. Horses are also looking well, but the grass is short for cattle, and tl.ey are only in a fair condition. Every stockman is saving all the feed possible, selling no grain or hay, and slacking all the straw that can be obtained, as they look forward -to having to feed for a longer time than usual. They say the signs all point to a hard winter. Pre vailing winds have been from the north and northwest which means snow, instead of rain. An old time weather prophet of thr.t region says that in preparation for a cold season, the horses on the range have grown an extra long and thick coat of hair, and the badgers are digging winter burrows on the low lands, while lu wet winter they dig them on the hillsides.
