The average Oregonian is happy now, as the mists are prevailing. Eugene is the best lighted city in the state and it's taxes are the lowest. The "Bean King" is dead, but Boston baked beans will Btill be in the market. The football enthusiasts aro now speculating on the outcome of tbe Portland game. It is rumored in political circles that tho Oregonian will not fight Sonator Mitchell for re-election. Can this be possible. The last term of circuit court in Lane county was an inexpensive one. Criminal cases have been scarce here for the past two or three years. Tho latest intelligence from New York h that the hop-raisers gen erally are ruined. Many fields were unharvested, and many others were plowed up. Mortgages will bo foreclosed, and hundreds will go out of business. Tho American appleB now in European markets are Baldwins, Greenings, Kings, Northern Spys and Ben Davis; also a few carloads of Pippins from Virginia, The highest grades of these apples are selling in London and Paris for 3 to 0 a barrel. Itev Grannie, a Salem minister, makes the statement, "that 999 out of 1,000 are born of lust, and that the marriugo relation is little hotter than legalized licontiousness." Such a quack and sensationalist should bo driven from tho pulpit by his church. Ho is a disgraco to his high calling. In my judgment, neither Ken tucky nor Maryland went republi can because of free silvor, nor be cause of the the single gold stand ard; but because tbe common peo ple of those, states wanted an op portunity to punish tho men who so basely bntrayed them in the last congress. An occasional pruning is a most excellent thing for any great party. The democratic party has had somo oxporionco in that line, and is bettor for it. Thus Bayeth Napoleon Davis, secretary of the Oregon slate dem ocratic control committee. Elections aro exponsivo, ordin arily, but more money was spent during the recont campaign in Now York than in any similar canvass for local office. Tho roward which attended success at the polls is leprescntcd by tho sum of $132,500, tho aggregate salaries for ono yoar of the candidates on the county ticket. To secure this year ly return for periods ranging from throe to iourtccn years the d;fferont political organizations have ex pended $225,000. Tammany heads tho list of campaign spenders, bo causoit found it necessary to raise an unusually largo corruption fund. It gathered together $95,000, which was distributed whore it would do tbe most good. Tammany leaders realized tnat their fight wasa dusper ato one. Exporionco in office has taught them that the pecuniary ro waid are great enouah to risk even tho danger of spending a term in prison. For this reason they were audacious in their distribu tion of money for campaign purposes. Charles Armstrong now has his horse shoeing maohine in working order at Milton, and applied it in a practically way for the first time on Monday. This machine holds tho rearing, plunging cay use so tightly and firmly that it is nil possible for him to hurt either him self or the man driving the nails. The animal operated on when an Eagle reporter was present was a bad one, but he was handled with neatness and dispatch. First he was led to the machine and the halter-strap tied to a post; then the adjustable sides were swung in, the wido canvas supports hooked uj and the animal raised clear off the floor bv a windlass. While in this position the shoe was driven by the blacksmith. Then the animal was dropped to the floor again and re leased, and went off apparently satisfied with ihe treatment re ceived. All danger to horse and workman is entirely obviated by this simple yet ingenious device. Clipped the Climax.
