By this morning's express we re ceived a box of peaches from Jackson ville with the following words written thereon: "Jacksonville, Oregon, vs Willamette Peaches, compliments of Cbas. Nlckell." We carefully took the cover off of the same and was sur prised to see such magnificent speci- niensof the Southern Oregon peach family, for those which havo been shipped here this summer for sale have been of a very inferior quality. The box contained 39 peaches and they tipped the scales at 22 ponids, net weight. Theii flavor was also like unto the article raised here. We sup pose the following item from that old Southern Oregon religious weekly is the reason the fruit was shipped: . "Bro. Campbell of the Eugene Guard Is known to have a penchant for manipulating wind through his millinery; but the annexed 'whopper' is perfectly overwhelming undeutitlis him to rank with Baron Munchausen, Eli Perkins and . other gentlemen of like versatility: 'Willamette valley peaches are shutting the Southern Oregon product out of the market here. The Imported nrticle does not compare with that grown at home.'" We are now of the opinion that the Willamette valley and Southern Ore gon can discount California in raising peaches. This is common ground. Still we think our peaches will pass muster with those sent us. Thanks Charley for the compliment and when you next come to this city "Just to see Campbell," we will certainly treat you kindly. ., I'lie Uoose Tlmt Luld Uotden Eggm Ought not to have been slain.
