Manufactories in tlio east are busy and their products generally are held at advanced prices. Labor shares in the returning prosperity. Lane county has been pretty well stripped of two and three old steer. It seems to be poor policy for farmers to sell young stock, but probably in many instances they are compelled to have money. That Bo-called church at Omaha which advocates worship in the nude, goes a little too far in the matter of dress reform. This country guarantees religious liber ty but it must be oxeroised with clothing on. Seid Back and Lotan are apply ing for a new trial. It is more than probable they will receive a sen tence in jail instead. The notori ous methods, they UBod in illegally admitting "Chinamen into the United States justifies the verdict. The civilized nations of the earth should take the brutal Turk by the throat and compel him to treat the Armenian Christians .fairly else throw him in .the Bosphorous. Such an inhuman massacre as that several months since should not be tolerated a Bingln moment. This gives promise of being a glorious year for Oregon fruit. The strawberry yield is largo, and the cherry crop will soon be ready for market. Othor fruits will fol low in their seasons with abund ant yields. The tour of Stanford-Berkeley university youngsters, under the name of a mandolin club, certainly will not benefit those institutions, if their notions here are to be con sidered a fair sample. They had rauah better be at home with their parents. Hop yards as a rule are being thoroughly worked this season, al though no prospect for good prices. Late advices from New York are that hops have been badly damaged by freezing weather and predictions of only half a crop are made. If this is realized the growers should obtain a fair price. The Eugene flouring mill is being substantially built. The proprietors proposo to put in a first class plant. While the capacity is not large, it will be able to fully eupply the market within reach. Failure has attended most of the Oregon flouring mills that at tempted to enter foreign markets. Too large a capital is required to conduct such a venture. The mill that produces a good article, and works for the home market need not fear failure. Pendleton E. O.: A man named Hiram Woods has been convicted in Portland of stealing timber from government land.' Now the next conviction to be reported should be J. B. Montgomery, of Portland, who not only has captured and taken from the government timber, but the land itself and all it con tains. There is net a greater land grabber on the coast than the versa tile and accomplished J. B. Mont gomery. We would like to inquire of the proper officers, those who did so much to convict Hiram Woods, when Montgomery's trial will be oommencedl The straddling platform of 1S92 on the financial question will not be repeated next year. Ken tucky and Illinois ure good ex amples of a feeling that will be in tensified as the presidential year approaches. In the former state republicans distinctly state they aro opposed to free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1. The demo crats of Illinois state explicitly that they favor it. When the next national conventions meet candidates will be nominated who stand on the platforms and re pre sent their parties. Squirrels in Swarms. The Wal la Wulla Stuti'Hrimn says: Heretofore Snako river has been a barrier between the squirrel swarming country to the north and Walla Vaila county, but it fa so no more. The ferrymen and farmers In the vicinity of Lyons' ferry report that the pesky little rodents are swimming the Snake river by thous ands and as soon as they get across im mediately attack the growing grain. Something must be done at once or the entire country will be captured by them. There Is no doubt that they swim across the river, for the ferry men say they see them.
