McKENZlE WAGOS KOAD. The proponition made by the McKenzie, Salt Springs & Des chutes Wagon Road Co. to sell the road, bridges, etc., to Lane county for $1,000, or else submit the price of same to appraisement, is a very reasonable one, and will commend itself as the easiest solution of the difficulty successive county courts have experienced with this impor tant thoroughfare. The stockhold ers state that $10,000 more than receipts have been expended on the road. We are not aware what the receipts have been, but believe that no one who has traveled the road will contend that it could be built today, with cheaper labor and improved methods, for a less sum than $10,000. There was hardly moro than a trail when they com menced work, and the grudes, many of them expensive and heavy, bridges, culverts, clearing of the right of way, not taking into con sideration the large amount of labor and cost involved in con structing it through four miles of rugged, fractious lava, upheaved and melted in almost every con- cievable shape, all are silent wit nesses to the truthfulness of their statement. While they cannot be reimbursed for the lull amount of outlay, justice demands something like a reasonable compensation should be paid. The temporary shoaling of the Siuslaw bar, caused by continuous Bouthwest winds, is unfortunate as it will require harder work to ob tain further appropriations for the jotty building. It will notie long howovcr until the tidos will clean out a ohannel. The jetty when completed will confine the water and then nothing of this kind is liable to happen. At one time be fore the Coos bay jetties were built about twenty steam and Bailing crafts wore caught inside for nearly two months by a shod bar the sand being piled up by southwest storms. Now they have deep water, and the channel and bar do not vary. It anything ever got .to be tire some and disgusting it is the itera tion and reiteration of goldbug stock views in theOregonian, taken from reform club literature, al though not credited to that collec tion of New York aristocrats; ex changes and every other imagin able Bource. Wo pay for the Ore gonian in hopes of getting news but find instead column after col umn daily of this everlasting twad dle about the 50 .cent silver dollar, silver monoiuetxlism, etc., etc. And there is no variation in the echoes from Wall and Lombard streets. More tree trimming would un doubtedly promote the health of the community. Many do not rea lize how completely the luxuriant foliage of the maple shuts out sun shine, light and air. We grow up Tith the trees and do not notico the size they have attained, and are averse to cutting thorn down oven where needed. Eugene has many shade trees to which the ax should be applied. San Francisco accounts of mur ders are getting monotonous. The daily papers of that city are mainly filled with accounts of crimes com mitted within her borders. A.race meeting brings people together from all parts of- the country. It is a good investment far a .town. The university has done excellent work durinz th past year and when the next term opens in Sep tember a largely increased attend ance is confidently expected. Kentucky republicans in conven tion will favor the gold standard. Illinois democrats will declare fur both metals and free coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1. At least that is the tenor of dsipatches last night. Kkke Heading itooM. The free readliiK room seems to grow in popu larity every month. The attendance has from the first preved the need of a froe reading room in Eugene, but when the managers found that be tween fifty and seventy persons visited it en last Saturday, all for the purpose of reading, they thought an effort would have to be made scion to en large the facilities for reading. This certainly wll allay any doul.t anyone may havo as to the need of a free read ing room in Eugene. THE HUSCULAR SYSTEM of every weary, fatigue.
