A Merry Crowd. The Eugene
delegates to the U E convention at Sa
ternoou, and a merry crowd thoy
lem arrived home on the local this af
were. As the train slowed down the
usual crowd which assembles daily to
see the big eugino and the cars was
somewhat startled and agreeably sur
prised to hear sweot strains ofmuslo
issuing from tho coaches, but seon af
ter discovered the cause as the En
denvorers initio forth, continuing their
singing and winding up with "God
Be With You 'till we Meet Again" as
the train pulled out of the station.
Case Dismissed. The case of Dr.
Artman vs U. M. Jackson, assault aud
battery, was heard at Junction City
Saturday. Dr. Artman left town that
morning, and did not return, so a jury
was Impanelled aud the case proceeded
without him. Five witnesses for tho
prosecution were examined, aud the
prosecuting attorney then moved for a
ditmit'Sul of the case, as there was no
evidence justifying the arrest. He al
so moved that the costs in the case bo
! assessed to Dr. Artman, and thejus-
I tiee complied with the motions.

ried out. The refreshments served
were very aico aud the lemonade
seemed to be relished by those who

Whiskers Beaten,
The much talked of foot ruce be
tween Trine (Whiskers) of Heuderson
and Whitney of Cottage Grove took
place at the Harris race track west of
town Saturday afternoon. A large
crowd, mostly sporting people of this
city and Cottage Grove, was present
and excitement ran high. Betting was
Indulged In quite freely and large
sums of money changed hands over the
result.
As was previously stated a horse
race was also run. The race was be
tween Bed Bird, owned by McKinney
of Cottage Grove and Bay Dick, own
ed by Gilcress of Creswell. It was a
600-yard dash and the latter won the
race. The purse was a horse.
Considerable time n as lost in pre
paring for the foot race and it was not
run until about half past four o'clock.
The excitment was intense when the
sprinters appeared on the track and
when the result was known the cheer
ing became terrifllo. Whitney won in
a 100-yards run by about a foot and a
half, and it was the Cottage Groveites
who were making most of the r.oise.
The result was a complete surprise to
the Eugeneites, as they were con
fident "Whiskers" would win the raco
and had done some heavy betting on
him.

The lecture by Grand Master Work
man W. W. Brannin, on "The Prin
ciples of United Workmen" will take

instead of In the Methodist church as

TWO MORE HATE GONE.
Pioneers- Jouu Bailey and John
Ntoois Depart This Life.
John Bailey, known by all the old
residentsof Lane county, died at his
home live miles southwest of Eugene
Sunday afternoou, May 12th, aged a
little over 77 years. He had been In
poor health for some weeks, suffering
with la grippe, then pneumonia, and
dually lung fever. Mr. Bailey was
born in Clay county, Kentucky. He
crossed the plains in 1S47, arriving in
Lane county in the fall of that year.
He was married in December 1850, to
Elizabeth Wright, and five children
were born unto them by that union.
Mis. llaiiey died April End, 1S01, and
Mr. llaiiey, September 2, 18U2, married
Mrs. Murphy, uud five children were
the fruit of that union. Mr. Bailey
has always lived an honorable, up
right life, and alone time held the
ollice of county commissioner, but
further than that took no prominent
part in public affairs.
The funeral services will be con
dueled at his late home tomorrow, and
the remains will bo buried in Oak Hil1
cemetery.
John Stoops, one of the pioneers of
1853, died at his home at Pleasant Hill
Saturday, May 11th, aged 75 years, of
dropsy.
Mr. Stoops was born lu Hamilton
county, Ohio. He came to Oregon
and to Lane county October 15, 1853.
He was married in March, 1841, to
Nancy Lowe, who died several years
ago, and he was again married to
Phoebe Parker. He was the father of
eleven children, nine of whom are
living.
The funeral services were conducted
at his late home today at 11 a. m. and
the remains were buried in the Pleas
ant Hill cemetery.

favor of Springfield. Yesterday after
noon another game was played at

with still worse results for Eugene, the
