Whilo tho people of Kugenc are talking diversified farming to the tillers of the soil, the said tillers should talk to the people of town of their neod of diversified manu factories. Both are needed to in sure prosperity. There is a forward movement from the Atlantic to tho Pacific, and the wave of leturning prosper ity is visihlo on all sides. Cheer up, display some energy and help hasten the day when tho cry of hard times will be heard no more. No longer will the public school teacher of Newton, Mass., have her ears tortured by the excrucia ting shriek of the slate pencil, as it traces its path across tho surface ef the once harmless, necessary slate. Tho authorities of that city have ostracized these articles as being hotbed.8 of bacilli, sowing desease and contagion among their inno cent owners. Salem Statesman: Yesterday a man stepped from the state prison a free man, after having served the term for which he had beon com mitted for having given whiskey to Indians a thing ho can do today with impunity, as tho courts havo since decided that it is no crime What kind of jr.stico is this that causes this man to go through life vfith the brand of "convict" upon him, while thousands of men who commit the Bame ''crime" that he did go free? Tho deoision in the courts came too lato to do him any good. Two indictments against tho notorious Nat Blum havo been dis missed by Judge Stephens nt Port land, on motion of the prosecuting attorney. Two important wit nessess are not now obtainable, and conviction was considered impossi ble. Suoh is tho resultof tho law's delay, and tho delay was occasioned purposely to enable this criminal to escape justice because he had onco buun a prominent man. Had bo been less prominent ho would have been punished promptly. Such follows are to society tho most dangerous of criminals, and yet the protection society asks through her courts is ignored. Telegram: Portland's organ of populism opines that "one of the issues of tho stato campaign next year should bo tho abolition of tho railroad commission, as it costs tho btalo an enormous amount of money and no benefit is derived." That was ono of thu issues of the stato campaign last year, and tho desire of the people then expressed was thwarted by tho obstruction ists ill tho lato legislature whoso tactics the populist organ approved. Jt is a safe policy, however, to ad vise a sliurt-memoried peoplo this year as to what they should do next year. Much gossip is heard in London with regard to the queen's 70th birthday anniversary on May 24th. It is not so much tho festivities which aro to be connected with this event which form the subject of gossip as the fact that it is freely rumored that her majesty will abdicate on that day, and after that Prince of Wales will reign as King Edward VIII. It is learned that tho queen expressed her wish to Indicate at a nieeling not long ago, I at which the Prince of Wales, I Lord Kfiglmry anil at least two members of tho cabinet were pres ent. If hrr majesty surrenders the crown on that day (die will have re:gned 58 years, the longest reign of any monarch of the 19th cen tury. The postmaster-general bus de cided to establish a marine mail service at Detroit for the free deliv ery and collection of mail matter ol vessels that pass up and down (he Det'oit river and cjrry a float ing population of 25C0 to 3000. More tonnage passes Detroit than any other port in the world. Dur the season of navigation on the laki s a vessel passes Detroit every seven minutes during the day The new service will therefore be continuous and will he conducted by means of a steam launch, which will be used by tho postal 'em ployes. The new service will be maintained through the free delivery appropriation in the bureau of the first assistant postmaster-general. Mail will be delivered to the vessels by carriers .just as it is to ordinary business houses. Purks' Bure Cure is a positive specific in all diseases of the Liver and Kid neys. It la curious what a ponchnnfc Dickens hnd for certain nioloilraniotio situations, which scunicd to his fanoy so telling that ho ropeatod and reproduced thorn many timos over. Ho had a lively dramatio turn, and I always thought would have bad extraordinary success as a dramatist I onco asked him why he had not taken up this 'lino" seriously, and I think ho mado tho excuso it was long ago, many yoors bofore his death that bo had noi tiino, tasto or pationoo. Tho real reason no doubt was that he could not work without expanding and could not "carve beads upon a cherry stono." A literary friend, who has his "Boz" at his fingers' ends, has with groat aoutenoss pointed out to mo that Nicholas Nloklcby was a gonulno "Adolphl walking gentle man." His manner, borolo bursts, pro tection of his slstor, boarding of Ralph, etc., wero all elomcnts In tho-Adolphl inolodraina. Ralph was a rogular stage villain. That his works are all dramatio and conceived in tho true spirit of tbe stago is plain from tho vast list of adap tations. Each story has beon adapted again and again and will boar the procoss admirably. Ono method for winding up His plot, to whioh ho was exoessively partial, was the unmasking of the villain owing to tho bo trayal of some confederate. Tho parties aro gonerally brought together In a room by the more virtuous membors. Tho oon federato then omergos from bis conceal ment and tells a long story of villainy. We have this donouoment first in "Oliver Twist." where Monks makes his revela tions. In "Niokleby" Ralph Is confronted with "the man Snawloy and Squoors." In the "Old Curiosity Shop" Qullp Is similarly exposed. In "Barnaby Budge" Haredale forces his hereditary enemy to make revelations. In"Chuzzlewlt" Jonas is confronted with another betrayer. In Copnorflold" Uriah Heep Is denounced and exposed by Mr. Mlcawber. In "Bleak House" Lady Dedlook Is similarly traokod. Iu nearly all the cases tbe guilty person goos off and commits suiolde.
