Entered ai seeond-elass matter at the Eugene, Oregon, postomce. WEDNESDAY,- MARCH 13, 1895. Boms good came out of the re cent Oregon legislature. It reduced appropriations over half a million dollars for the next two years. This will not be an expensive term of court to Lane county. The criminal cases are of a trifling na ture and pre quickly disposed of. The ornamental Oregon railroad commission should come to Eu gene and investigate the freight rates that allow wagon teamsters to successfully compete with the railroad in hauling freight. We give the following from a Levanworth paper as a sample of the flowery style not often equaled : "The furious rage of a fiery mon ster was relegated to an arena of impotenoy before accomplishing much of its fiendish design last Thursday morning. The demon was shooting forth its lurid tongue in the residence of Dispatcher Bell, and was first discovered by Ed Gillis. A few gallons of water ju diciously applied saved the build ing from curling heavenward in smoke and ashes, with a compara tively small loss." The detractors of silver announce the Bilver dollar as dishonest. But none of them will attempt to ex plain why silver commanded three per oent. premium over gold, when by a conspiracy it was demonetized in 1873, and then began to decline in value . throughout the world. History and faoto cannot bt con troverted by monomaniacs of mon ometallism with prattle about the "honest" dollar, Legislation by congress, for which millionaire John Sherman iB responsible, is the cause of the decline in silver, the appreciation of gold, and the depreciation of values that have steadily progressed since the in famy was consummated in 1873. Restoration of silver will not bring an immediate return of prosperity, but will at once start the wheels of progress in that direction. A few of the donors of the Ne braska relief supply have . been heard from. Most of them desire the contributions to be used at home while requests have been made that their contributions be sold and the money forwarded The larger number probably will not respond, and the collection will likely be distributed in this coun try. While there is no question of great suffering existing in Ne braska, designing men are making use of it for personal gain. We were shown a letter tho other day in which was inclosed a printed return enveloie, and a pasteboard money card, with a hole in it for the insertion of a quarter, or less amount, requesting money. The excuse for the request was that a large number of the people were suffering through lack of emnlov- ment, and as the town needed an opera house nnd oity hull badlv. the money could be used for that purpose. Ot course it is a swind ling scheme, as a considerable por tion of the cost of a buildine would have to be sent out of the state for material, thus affording no relief home. at Washington Post: "I take it that the silver question will be one of the chief issues in your country in the next national election," said Sir Charles Hunt, of England, to a reporter at the Arlington. "It is also going to be a great issue in Great Britain. The friends of sil ver are gaining in numbers and in fluence all over Europe, and the cause is growing stronger in Eng land every day. My own belief is that we shall never have any per manent prosperity until the great nations of the world come together and fix an agreement that will re habilitate silver as a money metal. I wish that the United States were able to maintain silver alone, but she cannot do it without the help of the other governments." "I have studied the money ques tion in India, in Europe, and in America, and though I haven't the slightest interest in silver as a pro ducer or owner, I believe that its demonetization has been the cause of the great depression that exists in trade in every civilized country today. The masses are just begin ning to see this, but they will learn very rapidly henceforth and in the next general elections in the Unit ed States and England we shall have a popular verdict in favor of bimetallism." Jacksonville Times: Borne fear Is entertained that the warm weather prevailing will iause the hatching ot grasshoppers so early as to do more or less damage to growing crops. Last year several residents of the valley suf fered considerable loss by these pests, and extensive deposits of their eggs have already been noted. However, we may yet bave frosts enough to re tard the Incubation. Id Fashioned compound cathartic pills ''blue pills,"Kl omel or other mercu riat preparations, should not be U3ed in these days of enlight ened medical science, when it is so easy to If et a purely vegetable Jiill n concentrated brm, ' sugar-coated, in glass vials, at any store where medi cines are kept ' Dr. Pierce was .first to Introduce a Little Pill to the American eople. Many bave imitated them, but none ave encroached his " Pleasant Pellets " in true worth, or value, for all laxative and cathartic purposes. Once Used, they are Always In Favor. Assist Nature a little now and then, with a gentle, cleansing laxative, thereby remov ing offending matter from the atomach and bowels, toning up ana invigorating the liver and quickening its tardy action, and you thereby remove the cause of a multitude of distressing diseases, such as headaches, in digestion, or dyspepsia, biliousness, pirn- ties, blotches, eruptions, boils, constipa ion, piles, fistula and maladies too numer ous to mention. If people would pay more attention to properly regulating the action of their bowels, they would have leas frequent occasion to call for their doctor's ser vices to subdue attacks of dangerous dis eases. That, of all known agents to accomplish this purpose, Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets are unequaled, is proven by the fact that once used, they are always in favor. Their secondary effect is to keep the bowels open and regular, not to further constipate, as is the case with other pills. Hence, their great popularity, with sufferers from habitual constipation, piles and indigestion. They absolutely cure sick headache, bill eusncss, constipation, coated tongue, poor appetite, dyspepsia and kindred derange ments of the atomach, liver and bowels. . A free sample of the "Pellets," (l to J doses) on trial, is mailed to any address, post-paid, on receipt of name and address on postal card. Address for free sample, World's Dis. We are requested by the young man whose misfortune we alluded to in our last report to say his presence at the forbidden residence was not for the purpose of seeing the young ladies.and judging from his remarks he feels himself amply able te grapple with the "big brother." Of course the big brother is a little shy (?) of him. ' Several of our young people attended the Japanese wedding at Eugene Wed nesday evening. Our school meeting passed off quiet ly Monday. Quite a number of voters were out. Wm. Btewart and B. F. Keeney were re-elected director and olerk, while H. A short time ago two young men near Elk Point pre-empted a piece of sandbar on the Missouri, and started to search for the hulk of an old steamer, that was sunk before the war, with a valu able cargo on board, Including 100 bar rels of whisky and a large amount of farm machinery. After some effort, they located the vessel and sank a shaft 15 feet to it. They are olnarlng the hold and will try to take the whisky out as soon as it can be reached. It is the only part of the cargo that is expected to be ef any value. The steamer was one of the best on the river in its day, aud was scuttled when on fire. The river channel changed before it could bo raised and the boat , was left buried deep In the bar. Fob Rent. A small bam convert lent to the business portion of the city Inquire at this office.
