NOT 80 UNCOMMON. At Quinoy, 111., a great mistake was recently made in an examina tion before the county court, which came near landing a sane man in the asylum. Dr. Hendrick sent his insane brother to that city for the purpose of having the court ex amine him as to his mental condi tion. After the jury was empan eled the sheriff went back to the front of the spectators aftor his vic tim of insanity, but not knowing the man, secured one Tom Niohols, a railroad engineer, and believing himself in posession of Hendrick, asked him to take the insane chair. All eyes were turned on Nichols, who thought he was boing used in the case of Hendriok, as a witness, who was taking it all in as one of the speotatorB. The jury, thinking they had the right man, declared him insane, and the sheriff toek him in custody and proceeded to lock him up. It was with great difficulty that Nichols mudo him olf known to the shoriif and sc oured his release. That nine men out of evory ten would bo pro nounced orazy, upon examination, is almost certain. What a spectacle is that of a Eu- gone merchant hauling potatoes to Corvallis in winter on a wagon road that parallels the Southern Paciflo railroad I The wagon will return loaded with freight. Is it any wonder that hard times exist when a railroad levios a toll that makes it possible tor wagons to haul freight over our bad winter roads in profitable competition? Yet the legislature has wasted the entire session threshing Bonutoriul straw, apparently nevor paying any attention to the gigantic mo nopoly that throttles the industries of Western Oregon, charging every possible cent that traflio will bear. Many of the members were elected on distinot pledges to abolish the railroad commission and enact a maximum freight and fare bill. How will they answer thoir con stituents? . 1 The movement to establish a na tional park at Appomattox, says the Globe-Democrat, is meeting with much favor in Virginia and elsewhere. It is virtually the place where the civil war ended, and there is no finer instance in military history of the meeting of two great generals who were also fcontlomcn, one to accept a final re verse in a manly spirit, the other to show equal nobility in securing the fruits of national victory with out the slightest fooling of personal triumph, A group commotnornt ing the grand simplicity of Grant and Loo in that culminating scone of war would do no harm to the fame of either, or to the prido of American citizenship. William Brookfield, republican, who the New York republican ma chine, run by Tom l'ltitt, was and is antagonistic to, has been ap pointed by Mayor Strong commis sioner of publio works. Tho may or hat also appointed Francis M. Scott, democrat, as . corporation oounoil. New York City has a business man for mayor and fit men are being appointed to office regardless of politics. The Simon-McGinn combination could control the sonate but ran against a snag in the bouse. Tomorrow frill tell the tale of the senatorial squabble at Salem. The legislature has done little but fight over the senatorship. Per haps it ia for the best. The hop men are preparing to put the hop yards in order for an other season. Many of them are not discouraged by the low prices obtained for the crop of last season. People who do not advertise their places of business, their wares, etc., are bure to fall behind. Extensive and ingenious advertising hasmade many a firm wealthy. Get in line and have some enterprise. There are three women in the Colorado legislature. Thev are said to be very exemplary in their conduct and are treated with be coming oourtesy by the sterner sex. It is reasonable to suppose that they can do their share of the talk ing when they are fully initiated. We might tell you more ubout One Minute Cough (Jure, but you probably know that It cures a cough. Every one docs who has used It. It is a per fect remedy for coughs, colds hoarse ness. It is in especial favorite for children, being pleasant to take and quick in curing. Osbukn & DkLano.
