Generally speaking we say tliat winter begins with the first Deoomber, spring with March 1, Buramcr with Juno 1, and au tumn with the 1st of September. Astronomically speaking tho above is incorrect, that mode of reckon ing marking the beginning of tho seasons at the equinoctial und sol stitial points. We passod tho win ter solstico (which marks tho be ginning of tho winter season) about oiglitoen days ago. This winter aolstico is the moridian panning through the point whore it touches tho tropio of Capricorn. The sum mer solstice, tho other solstitial point roferred to, if the one touched on Juno 21. Both tho spring and tho autumnal seasons are marked by tho sun crossing tho equator on March 20 and September 22 re spectively. According to tho above arrangement of things, a year is the period which elapses from tho tiino of tho sun'B nppearanco on ouo of tho tropical circles to tho time of hiB return to tho Bitmo, Such a year is called a civil or trop ical year. It varies slightly, but hits an avorago mean length of 3G5 days, 5 hourB, 48 minutes and 49,7 seconds. In New York City, for five con secutive years, the proportion of Deaths from Consumption has been three in every Twenty Persons. Epidemiol of Cholera, Yellow Fever and other diseases of similar clmracter, ao ter. riblc in their results, occasion wide spread alarm and receive the most careful consid eration for their prevention and cure, while consumption receives scarcely a thought, yet the number of their victims sinks into insignificance when compared with those of consumption. Mr. Hammond is in New York arranging the flounce, and it is thought work 011 tho road will begin with vigor in the spring. Astoria people anticipate a boom when the road is in progress.
