The editor of tho Manufactures' Hecord in an article relative to the many Bufforora in western Nebras ka, suggests that "the south should contribute a solid train loud of corn," and says it should be sent to Nobruska for distribution. Tho suggestion is a good one, and the Globe hopes the south will sustain ill well eitablished reputation for charity and generosity by contrib uting the corn, ua suggested by the Manufacturers' Uecord. Tho Globe has a suggestion to mnke also to the effect that the Manufacturers' Record make Bome additions to its suggestion that tho south send corn, and suggest that the woolen manufacturers of the east send a solid train load of manufactured woolen goods lo Nebraska for dis tribution -that as a further sug gestion it make a similar sugges tion to the boot and shoe manufac turers to sond a solid train load for distribution to the needy barefoot ed ones of tho Bruno state; that it add yet another to the meat packors to do likowiflo; ami yot another to the coal combines for a Bolid train load of coal to cook the corn and warm tho home, now bo desolate. From the report of the railroad commissioners of Oregon wo learn that the a vera go ton mileage of roads in the United States is 551,- 232, and the average rate per ton per mile, .893 cents; on tho Oregon Hailway it Navigation Company's line in 1893 the ton mi lea go per mile of road was 283,455, less than one-half of tho average of the Unit ed States, and tho rate per ton per mile, 1.3GG cents. On the South ern Pacific's lines in Oregon the ton mileage per milo of road for 1894 was 42,942, about one-iixth the volume of the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company, and the rate per ton per mile, 2.40 con Is. The difference betweeu the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company's rate ami that of the Southern Pa cific is accounted for on tho ground that the volume of t ratio of the former i much larger, as abovo set forth, and niuoh of it through busi- neBrt, unci the average haul )m.t too ia 223 miles, while tin: average! haul of the latter is hut 93 mile.
