After showing a letter in which he
said he had murdered his wife, Rob­
ert Manning, of Westport, shot and
killed himself in the police station
here early today, and the police later
found the mutilated body of his wife
where the man had directed. Man­
ning's wife had refused to live with
him.
Fanning was the worse off for 11-

London, July 26.—Louis Blériot, the Frenchman who
made history by flying across the English channel from Les
Baraques to Dover, a distance of 21 miles, in less than half
an hour, and his little Monopine reached Londan this morn­
ing, the former to receive the monetary fruits of his achieve­
ment and the latter to be placed on exhibition to the finamcial
advantage of both a London hospital and the enterprising pro­
prietor of the only American department store here.
Blériot returned to Dover to attend the civic reception in
his honor, and was almost mobbed by the enormous crowds
which greeted him everywhere. A similar ovation awaited the
aviator at London,the ‘ Blériot fever” having seized a large part
>f the populace of Lnodon, numerous honors and medals await­
ing Blériot on this side of the channel, the principal prize being
a gold cup offered by Captain Wyndham for the first flight
across the channel. It will be presented to the Aero Club din­
ner on August 9.
Experts here regard Bleriot's feat as a vindication of the
monoplane type of machine over the bi plane. The French­
man's machine carries a greater weight in proportion to its
plane surface than ahy other t’ pe.

Company's big electric power plant at
T«.angle Lake, as mentioned by The
Luatd a few days ago, and at sev­
eral times previously, will be rushed
to completion soon is evidenced by
the filing of two condemnation suits
this morning by L. M. Travis, at­
torney for the company, to acquire
a right-of-way for the power flume
through a tract of the Oregon * Cal-
ifo: -lia Railway Company's land and
for a site for the power house.
It is desired to acquire a small
tract of three acres from the railroad
company.
The land is said to be
rocky and barren, and a value of
62.50 an acre has been set on it by
the electric company. It is alleged
in the complaint that the sum of
$7.50 has been tendered the railroad
for the land, but the sum has been
refused, and the parties concerned
are unable to reach an agreement
for the sale of the land.
The other complaint is against T.
H. Watkins and to condemn five
acr<-s which, the company alleges. Is
worth $60, end that sum has been
tendered Watkins for the land, but
he refuses to sell.
The complaint states that consider­
able construction work has been
done, The first filing on the water
right was made on September 26.
1906, and on March 25. 1907, actual
construction work was begun, ac-
cording to the complaint.
Big < a[>itali-t Behind It
The Guard has previously men­
tioned the fact that W. S. Spencer, a
capitalist, was behind this project,
but little has been said as to his iden­
tity. It is learned that he is a big
tobacco manufacturer of Cincinnati,
and is worth al lthe way front $5,-
000,000 to $10,000,000. He is am­
ply able to build the big plant, which
will cost In the neighborhood of

tric power and light to Eugene, Junc­
tion City. Corvallis and other upper
Willamette valley cities. It Is learn­
ed that should the Lane County As­
set Company be unable to put its Sl-
uslaw railroad scheme through Spen­
cer and his associates may interest
themselves in the matter and build
an electric line.
John Francis Bope. about 43 v'g'rs
and single, was committed to the in­
sane asylum (his afternoon. He was
■ put off the midnight train here Sat­
urday night by the trainmen because
he appeared to be insane, and he was
locked up. Yesterday he was turned
loose, as he appeared perfectly ra­
tional. But later in the day he prov­
ed his insanity by going to the resi­
dence of R. McMurphey and demand­
ing admission. He was ordered
away by Mr. McMurphey. but he soon
returned and had to be forcibly eject­
ed from the premises, it taking three
men to do it. Bope was then locked
up and was given an examination this
afternoon before Judge Chrisman,
Drs. T. W. Harris and F. E. Selover
being the examining physicians.
Bope is a miner by occupation. He
says he hears strange voices and de­
clares that it was one of these voices
which told him to go to the McMur-
phev residence yesterday.
