He took up the ad vantages of the guarantee zy.it.em and then answered the objections made to it by Mr Taft and others. He began by asking why the deposi tors should be left unsecured when the National government demanded security of any bank with which it deposited money. He pointed out that the choice was between the pos tal savings bank and the guaranty bank, and accused Mr. Taft of fa voring an unnecessary extension of the sphere of government in advo cating the postal savings bank in stead of the guaranty bank. Mr. Bryan declared that he preferred the guaranty bank proposition, which would allow- the banks to attend to the banking business and yet compel JT but outward sighs of the evil them to give done in secret by myriads of dan- tr security. •iniff germs sapping the life blood pared spee oftbehair. Mr. Taft’s denunciation of the guaranty system is so sweep ing that no disinterested person can for a moment believe that he will either encourage or permit a law en abling National banks to participate in state systems. What the people need is a system whereby both state and National banks will be compel led to guarantee deposits, and only a Democratic victory can secure this reform. With a Democratic presi dent and a Democratic congress it will be easy to secure the adoption of a system which will make both state and National banks secure.” dates for State: Ing a Uie p C. M. TCHING SCALPI*. )ANDRUFFAND|t A number of l-ane county uopgrow- res held a meeting in Eugene this forenoon to talk over the picking sit uation and to talk "hops" in general. All parts of the hop-growing district of the county were fairly well repre sented. After duly considering the prospect for prices for the crop, it was resolved that the growers could not afford to pay more than 15 cents per 100 pounds for picking this year. According to remarks made by a number of growers, it Is likely that many yards will not be picked even at that price. Others will harvest their crops as usual and trust to a better ment in the market. Early yards iu the county com menced picking last week at 75 cents per hundred pounds, and it is proba ble that this price will prevail | throughout. Yards around Salem ¡.and Independence, where they pick ’ by the box, will pay 40 cents per box. which is equivalent to about 75 cents a hundred. Picking will probably not be gen eral until somewhere between the 5th and 10th of September. + INJUNCTION + AGAINST BUILDING ♦ + TRESTLE WORK ROBERTS WEAK + ANO HIS WOUND MAY BE MORTAL ♦ SICK I LANE COUNTY OTHER NATIONS HOP GROWERS AGRFE WILL SUPPORT ♦ ♦ * ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Late this afternoon John H.
