WILL BUILD GOVERNMENT TELEPHONE G. F. Redmond, an expert in tele phone construction work, arrived in Eugene from Portland with his fam ily a few days ago and left this morning for Lowell to begin work on the government telephone line from that place to Hill’s ranch, a distance of 28 miles toward the summit of the Cascade mountains He was ac companied by Deputy Forest Super visor J. Harvey, of this city, who will direct the beginning of the work. The preliminary work of building this line, such as purchasing the ma terial and locating the route, was done last year, and now actual con struction of the line between Lowell and the Hill ranch will be done. It was announced by The Guard sev eral months ago that a line would be built by the government to assist the forest service in its work, from Low-1 ell across the summit of the moon- tains to connect with a lino from I Prineville and other Eastern Oregon towns, thus giving direct telephone connection from Eugene to those points. Th“ new line may hie used by the public In conjunction with the cor poration lines connecting at Lowell and the several points in Crook coun ty. The work of pushing the line across the summit will probablv be done next year. All of this work Is under the direct supervision of Su pervisor C. R. Sell«. whose office is Ip this city. Supervisor Seitz says the work of building the trail from McKeuxie Bridge, along tne summit of ihe mountains, to the north fork of the Willamette river at Box Canyon a distance of seven miles, will begin In a short time and will be complet ed some time during the summer These improvements are all for the benefit of the forest service. There are now 14 or 15 men at work in this capacity In the Cascades east of s»r under the direction of the Eugene office. CASTOR IA For Infants and Children.
