Sam Ferguson passed here yester day on his way to Eastern Oregon, af ter abunch of horses. Wild strawberries ar.- ripe and the prairie is covered with them. Fishing Is good and plenty of big redsides are brought in daily, On June 15 we get our daily mall, which will be highly appreciated. Twenty tents are now on the ground at Belknap Springs, the larg- es£ camp that haH ever been on the ground at this time of the year. Walter Boone and family arrived here on the 7th on their way to the springs and are now ready ^o feed all that come. Mr. Boone has charge of the cooking department and he knows how It is done. He brought with him fifty fat hens to use when mountain game Is scarce. Walter says he will serve anything front cof fee end sandwiches to a chicken din ner and is prepared for short erder meals. Mrs. N. P. Metcalf arriv d on the stage yesterday to visit durin« the summer. Her home is in Saniza. Cal. Uncle Geo. Frizzell has a fine «ar den. He expects to furnish vegeta- bles to Ixith the Log House Hotel qnd springs during the season. John Douglass, of Portland, who is camping at the springs, got front Win. Yale a brown cub bear, and it is becoming quite a pet in camp. Mr. Douglas also bought a lot from Geo. Frissell near the Log House ho tel and will put up a fine residence during the summer. Several others who have purchaaed lots tn Frlessell- vllle will build during the season. Last Sunday Percy O'Brien, with a heavy four-horse stage loaded with people and camp supplies, passed up. going to Belknap Springs. The view is taken by Guardsmen that the measure was defeated because of a lack of understanding of the ne-4s and utilities of armories. The fa vorable vote was very large, especial ly in‘the cities, the cutting being done in the rural districts. The National Guard Association is already planning a new bill which will be presented before the next leg islature. This bill will ask for $100,- 000 in annual installments of $25.- 000 each, or ¡»ossibly an even larg- r sum will be asked for. The bill will de differently drafted, however, de fects which caused it to be held up being careful!/ omitted. The princi pal argument against the armory bill by the state grange, which had the measure referred to the people, was that no specific number of armories was mentioned; nor were there any details as to the cost or location. It was argu'ed that $100,000 would be insufficient to install armories in the twelve company stations of Oregon, and furthermore, that it would be es tablishing a bad precedent to leave the expenditure of so large a sunt to the state military board without re strictions. It was learned yesterday that the National Guard Association will secure data as to the cost on each armory and present the measure before the legislature In a most busi ness-like manner.—Oregimian.
