Oregon THURSDAY, JI XK 4, 19OM KL-W t’SE FOR DETECTIVES IN NEW YORK CITY A recent dispatch from New York ¡storms us that the detectives of that great city have entered a new field of labor. Of C. late I-*— a - great many 7 of them have been employed to find out all they can about the personal life and habits of bankers, their associa tions, their manners of business and methods of living. These Inquiries hate been instituted by depositors gnd sometimes the results of the in quiry have caused the depositors to transfer their accounts to other banks and in some cases directors have re signed. The dispatch says: “It is noth ing for a bank to want to know something about the men with whom it is doing business, but now the de positors are becoming more deeply isterested in the men who handle their money, and want to know their ascociates, habits of life and general business methods." This incident leads us to state a general proposition—that no man honors his own business who is in different to his associations and hab its. It makes no difference what the business is—selling cigars, baking bread, running a livery stable, prac ticing law or conducting a bank—it gets to the level of the character of the man who is engaged in it. It takes manhood to make the true bus iness man every time. And he who thinks he can do anything outside of business hours—indulge tn extrava gance, dissipation, and roystering as sociation—and not taint his business has not yet got on to the true relation of cause and effect. department.” a proft development of t uralness of expr< the mechanical at acterize tatives < inter-col sity of Chicago officia i numerous conte students, for which large prizes be offered.” No more absurd relic of the mod- dle ages remains than present-day notions of oratory. From the public rostrum to the socialist’s upturned barrel on the street corner, nobody speaks naturally. Heavy poundlug of the fist on the open Bible too fre quently constitutes • emphasis” in ths pulpit, while ou the rostrum few or ators ever mean anything either by gesture or intonation. Modern “oratory” is too tedious for toleration. The school originated in iguorauce and has been perpetu ated by vanity. The sole notion of the public speaker—following the ac cepted code—is not argument but im pression; he substitutes “color” for facts and plays to the eye rather than to the ear. If the University of Chicago sends forth several thousand young men with common sense no tions of how to address men, it will have conferred a great benefit upon the race. June 1 for Cra W aller and Medfoi v | s ®I: il at Walker Miss _____ Parks _____ was a visitor here this week. Uncle Joe Shelley, his son P. LONDON NEWS COUNTY FOR SIUSLAW The citizens of the Siuslaw valley are tired of waiting for the govern ment to improve the bar at the mouth of the river, so vessels can pass in or out without delay, and a plan is be ing discussed to raise fund» for the undertaking in another way It is proposed to bond that part of Lane county lynig west of the« Coast range of mountaiu for, say twenty or forty years, and use the money thus raised in building Jetties at the mouth of the river. It is thought by the pro moters that *100,000 can be raised In this way, and with this sum consld erable- of a start can be made to ward constructing the jetty. It is hoped by the time this sum Is ex pended that the* national government will be ready to take up the work and push it to completion. To meet the interest on the bonds each year it I b proposed to collect a toll of perhaps 25 cents a thousand feet on the lum ber and a proportionate sura on all other articles exported from this place. Later on a sinking fund can be raised in the same way to pay off the bonds when they become due. In this way the expense of building the jetty would be borne by the indus tries that ere directly benefitted by the work. Some of the leading busi ness men of the Siuslaw are agitating the question, and most of the others have declared themselves in favor of the measure. The legal aspects have not been entirely investigated, but It Is thought a bill can be passed by the legislature permitting the ques tion to be left to a vote of the peo ple of the district. This phase of the question will be looked into before long and we shall probably have something further to say about the matter later on.—Florence West. "8 in our public speaking -..¡a here by all drug One of the questions which vitally concerns every man is that of the future sources of power supply, says the Oregon Tradesman, It is state 1 that our anthracite coal fields will hold out but fifty years longer, an,l that in a hundred years the bituml- nous coal will be gone. Natural gas and petroleum fields are being ex- hausted rapidly. But there remains one source of power which should never be exhausted—the cheapest and the one without waste. Water is a magnificent source of power. In the arid sections of the country wa- ter conservatlon for irrigation pur- poses is being studied and applied We think the canals may be utilized for power purposes without loss to the men dependent on the water for irrigation purposes. It is claimed that it may interfere with navigation, but this is not an unsurmountable obstacle. The establishment of pow er plants does not necessarily bar navigation, but methods may have to be altered. Water power applied in the form of electricity will, we think, supply the needs of the future adequately. > OL 01 « CO GROWS HAIR cr r & ä NEWS FROM LOWER SIUSLAW COUNT RY X < bj to ? men n — Every Woman i H q CL.C Op> tr n ?
