Martin, arrested in Portland on the charge of murdering Nathan Wolff, a Portland pawnbroker, has a police record in this city and curi ously enougli was arrested tor rob bing the safe of M. Clow, a local pawnbroker. From the varied story told the Vancouver police by Martin, Chief Secrist. of the local force, be lieves Martin likely to deny the charge of murder in the face of th. most incriminating evidence, it was partialy through a description of the man furnished the Portland author ities by Secrist. who knew him well, that his capture was effected yester day. Martin's trial was to come up be fore the superior court on a charge of grand larceny, but through the Influ ence of his wife and friends the charge was reduced to petty larceny and Martin pleaded guilty and was fined 230, this amount being paid by his wife. After his experience here Martin soon left town and has not yet been seen by the local authori ties. I (Prom Tuesday's Daily Guard.) At a meeting of the city council last night the petition to pave Olive street, between West Fifth and West Tenth, was presented and it was voted to Instruct the city attorney to prepare the necessary ordinance ordering the work done Council man Gilbert made an effort to have the matter referred to the street com mittee but his motion to that effect was voted down. The petition was signed by a majority of the prop erty owners along the street. The city attorney was also instructed to d raw au ordinance ordering West be- Fifth and West Sixth streets. tween Wlllamette and Olive paved. Steam Roller Pur«'luioe<l. The matter of purchasing a steam roller to be used in tna. adamixlng the residence streets was brought up and after considerable discussion it was voted to purchase a machine of tha; kind. The city already owns a rock crusher anil an engine with which to operate It. After tbe roller is purchased the city will be in a p<- sition to build its own macadamized streets in the residence districts. Th»' roller will cost about IBM'’.
