Jan. 21.— In an inter view today with an Evening Telegram representative Francis Heney declar ed that land frauds were going on in Oregon to.lay as of yore, that the wholesale prosecution of land graft ers has not made the land thieves better but has simply made them more careful. April 23.—J. O. Watts’ residence, corner East Seventh and Pearl streets; roof fire, caused by defect- Ive flue; damage about »25. The equipment for fire protection at this date is as follows: Seventy-three hydrants well dis tributed about the city; one hose cart on East Eleventh street, one on Lawrence sfreet and a reserve cart at the city hall, each carrying *600 feet of hose in fair condition; one combination chemical engine and hose wagon at city hall carrying 1000 feet of ffrs’-class cotton hose; one hook and ladder truck. With the ex ception of the reserve cart, all are well manned. At a directors' meeting last night it was decided that temporary suspen sion was necessary, owing to recent heavy withdrawals of deposits. The expert accountant who advised the action expressed the opinion today that the bank is solvent, and will pay dollar for dollar. Reports reflecting on the stability of the bank have been in circulation for two months, and helped to pre cipitate the failure.
