Her Dame would necessitate an ocular demonstration. THEY WERE INDICTED Miss Ware, McKinley and Puter for Forgery. Gr.ind Jury Charges Them With Forging Names of Fictitious Persons to Homestead Applications. (Daily Guard,OetoLer 27.) The Uuited States grand jury this morning returned an indictment Hgainst Former United States Com missioner Miss Marie L. Ware, Horace G. McKinley, and S. A. D. Puter, charging them with forgery in con nection with that clause of tbe infor mation tiled previously by United StHtes District Attorney Hall relat ing to the utteriDg of forged signa tures in the Southern Oregon land fraud cases. The indictment against Miss Ware, McKinley and Puter is a long one, covering 45 pages of type written paper, and setting forth iu tbe re dundant verbiage of the law a total of 26 counts against the principals. The specific charges are that Miss Ware, McKinley and Puter have been guilty of forging the names of ficti tious persons and those of other per sons to homestead applications and final proofs, with the intent to de fraud the Government of the United States out of its public lands. Notwithstanding wild reports to tbe contrary, circulated at tbe time these cases were under consideration, the jury came to tbe conclusion that the names of the six personages in volved in tbe homestead applications and proofs, were purely fiotitious and invented for tbe sole purpose of gaining possesion of timber lands. • • • But the end is not yet. The infor mation filed ugainst the principals in these cases adds the charge of con spiracy on their part to defraud the Government, and before tbe grand jury lets go on the case there may be an indictment returned in this respect and also of individual cases involv ing tbe trio. After tbe grand jury has completed its Investigations of tbe charges against Miss Ware, McKinley and Puter, they will De required to ap pear, plead to the charges and have their bonds reuewed. Iu tbe mean I time, tbe bonds required for appear ance before the graud jury by Com- missioner Hladen hold good. —Tele gram, Oct. 27. II. A. The Booth-Kelly Lumber Com pany’s big mill at Spriugfleld closed down Saturday night for some time. Thia makes the company’s two largest mills now idle, the one at Wendling having closed down several days be fore work was stopped at tbe Spriug fleld mill. Tbe reason given for closing down the latter mill is the lack of logs, and tbe reason ns given to the Guard for the closing down of the Wendling mill is tbe lack of cars to haul the lumber away. A number of prominent loggers, who have been in the city since tbe Wendling mill closed dowD, »ay that it is reported that this is tbe beginning of a long period of idle ness among the loggers employed by tbs Booth-Kelly Company, and that tbe Wendling mill instead of com mencing operation» again within ten days, aa stated by tbe company offi cers here, will not be started up again for many weeks and perhaps months. They do not state the reason for this, but one thing which they claim points that way, is that all tbe men in the logging camps adjacent to Wendling have been laid off. Tbe Guard simply gives this as a generally circulated report among tbe loggers and print it for what it is worth. H. D.
