BIG STRIKE
EDWARD ELLIOTT LYONS.
A visit to the county jail gives oue
a slight insight to the life and condi
tion ot Elliott E. Lyons, who lies in
carcerated awaiting trial for the mur
der of Sheriff Withers.
Since the tragedy he has not read
auj’ of the papers containing the ac
count of the shooting or the subse
quent chase, uor has he asked to see
them.
He eats and sleeps regularly,
aud, as ho has recovered from bis ter
rible Might, 1« not exhibiting any out
ward signs of physical worry. Neither
does he appear repentant of his crime.
He lounges on the couch in his cell
or sits ou the solitary chair, with his
back to the light aud reads such books
as are furnished the prisoners of the
county bastile. He appears comfort
able and entirely oblivious of his sur
roundings or the enormity of the
penalty which he is sure to suffer
within the next two months.
Lyons exhibits no religious tendon
cies which so often appear iu the
criminals who are about to suffer
death. He looks well but has very lit
tle to say, 'sometimes passing whole
days without a word to anyone. In
spite of this ho does not appear
melancholy. Mrs. Lyons, wife of the
murderer, has also become eased some
what from her nervous tension and
sees things in anion rational light.
She appears to feel the disgrace moro
than her husband.
The routine of
jail life has also agreed with her aud
she looks quite well in spite of the
terrible burden upon her mind.

The governor’s veto of the forest
protection bill by Booth was not un
looked for, since several of the provis

have not been in accordance with the
chief executive's ideas of justice to
the taxpayers of Oregon.
While the
appropriaition is made of 8W*, an-
nuiilly, to carry out ihe provisioi a of
the net , the bill authorizes tho crea
tion of claims against the state which
might reach the sum of 850.CW, per
year. This would of course lie paid
by a deficiency appropriation at each
