Kansas Mao Who Wrote it is Nov Commissioner of Pensions. The following poem by Eugene T Ware, (“Ironquill”) who ha» been seleoted for oommiaaioner o' pensions to saoooed H Clay Evans, has subjected the writer to severe critioiem by the religious press: In a very humble oot la a rather quiet spot. In the suds and in tbo soap, Worked a woman fall of hope, Working single, all alone, In a sort of undertone, •'With tbeSavior for a friend, He will keep me to the end.” society, we are sure that the pagee of lx>al, state and national history will bear us out in the statement that the doctors have contributed largely towards the social, moral and material development of our oountry. The coupling of the honorable profession that seeks to save life, even at risk of their own t time«, with the «oldier whose only mission is to ruthlessly de stroy life, is a drone, a non-pro- duoer, a burden on sooiety, ie un deserved, unjust, * King Edward and queen will be crowned king and queen of tbe Britiah dominions in a little lees than two weeks. Tbe oeremonia extends from Monday, June 23, to Saturday, July 5. Here ia the program for the principal two daya: Not in sorrow nor in glee Working all day long was she, As her children, three or four Ployed around ner on the floor; But in monotone tbo song Hbe was bumming all day long, “With the Savior for a friend, He will keep me to the end.” Tburaday, June 26—The corona tion. Friday, June 27 — Procession through Loudon, which will be a military pageant some two miles long, representing every portion ol tbe British dominion. Jast a tr>fle lonesome she J ust as poor ae poor oan be, But her spirits always rose Like the bubbles in the olotbeo And, though widowed and alone. Cheered her with the monotone, Of a eavior and a friend Who would keep her to the end. I have seen her rub and scrub On the washboard in the tub Wnile the baby soaped in suds. Rolled aad tambled in the dads; Or was paddling in the pools, With old scissors sluok in spools; She still humming to her friend Who would keep her to the end. Human hopes and bnman creeds Have their root in human need» ; And I would not wish to strip From that washer woman’s lip Any song thst she can sing Any hope that song oan bring, For the woman has a fneud Who will keep bar to the end. This baa been their aim from tbe be ginning and tbe society baa worked to aooomplisb this end. The library owes its beginning to tbe energy of tbe Fortnightly women and tbe generosity of tbe publie spirited business men of tbe city, and it baa been booted free of obarge till the Fortnightly Club obtained rooms lot tbelr home in the Journal building. At tbe last meeting of the legisla ture an act was paaeed creating a fund for free public libraries. Tbe Fort nightly Club availed Itself of this op portunity ai d mads Itself free and ac cepted the money provided by the leg islative act from the city oouncll for Ita maintenance. Tbe mayor and one councilman, representing tbe city, were added to tbe library oommlttee and a regular librarian was employed and the library la now opeu to the pub lic two afternoons each week instead of ons aa formerly. The Fortnigbyly members have not relaxed their eflorts or Interset in build ing up tbe work of tbe library. Dur- mg last f 11 they gave a library benefit from which they realised tbe largest sum of money ever made at any one time by them. This money has »11 been expended in the purchase of books for the library. Tbe list of subscribers has increased so rapidly that it became necessary during tbe spring to provide larger rooms for lbs books and magazines. It is lbs hope of tbe Fortnightly women that tbe library may grow to become so large and useful in accomplishing good for tbe city that some day, in tbe near future, Il may be establiebod in a borne of ita own, and to this end tbe Fortnightly women are working.
