Eugene HA rURDAY Guard APRIL» “JACKSON STREET.’’ Many residents were greatly surprised and disgusted today at the action of tbs council last even ing in proposing to change the name ot Charnelton street to Jackson street. It is to be hoped that when the ordinance cornea up for final action that the oounoil will not make this change, and if they do, that Mayor Chrisman will vsto tbs msasnrs. Charnelton street is one of the few historical names of our grow ing oity. It was named after Charnel Mulligan, who gave forty acres of land in tbs vary heart of our city in 1854 to procure the location of the oounty seat here. The vote on the location was: Prior Blair's donation 105 votes. Mulli gan’s donation 134, against 155 for all other places. After the location of the oounty seat it was named after Eugene F Skinner, who also gave 40 sores of land tor oounty seat purposes, north of Mulligan'* donation. A few yean after this Charnelton etreet was named, said street being the western lino of hie donation land olaim. This was very proper. It seems to us a shame now that any person would want to blot ont about the onlv publio historical mention of this old pioneer. The citlsens should demand the defeat of thia ordinance. Again, why abould the name of a street be changed after its use oi over a quarter ofaoenturr? The organisation of the Native Bone of Oregon should bold a meet ing and condemn this proposed measure as one of its fundamental principles ie “to preserve intact the historical names of OregoD.” In Danger. Now come member, or members of the city oounoil would obangr the name of a etreet that has boruc the given name of Mulligai for all those many years t<> that of a president. What good reason ie there for the change of • name that ie locally historical t> one that has no eignifioanoe? Charnelton has boon a eatiefactori name for forty years, and io It now i to all persons having interoetaaloni the street, or in street names, bj that name. It should not be changed. Seyen hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars in uotee, 145,647 in coins, about fifty pairs of metal molds, 133 steel diee, 697 eets of plaster of parts molds, 183 steel, copper and sino platee, and eeveral tone of apparatus, instruments, advertising matter and other things were disposed of. Of the notes deetroyed 1760,000 were captured in the famous Brock way raid in Naw York in 1895. The money was mostly io 3500 Lincoln head gold notes and 9100 Cansdian notes. This wm one of ths tni»el celebrated counterfeit cases in the world, The pletM from which the notes were made were deetroyed at the same time. The money plates bad been held by the secret servioe on aouount of further indictments pending against Dr Bradford. Th* Register says the name “Charnelion,” applied to a street in Eugene, poteeeeee no significance, and that if it bad been named Mulligan it would have been different. The etreet was name! from Charnel Mulligan. If one name poooeeeee no significance why ehould the other? It ie a very floe distinction without any difference. If it may be sought to perpetuate the last name of an individual why not the first, especially when the name b not et the erdi nary T Wanted.
