BARKER MAKES A TALL Eugene ¡Guard baturday Wants You to See His Dolls, Knives, Air Guos, Albums and Big Stock of Xmas Toys. DECEMBER 8 ; Ou Tuesday, December 4, the Portland Oregonian rounded out a balf century of existence. In com- minoration of the semi-oentennifal of its being a fljiecial edition wm is« sued, giving a complete history of the paper, its publishers and editors. Cuts of the old and tbe magnificent new home of tbe paper are given, also a fac-simile of tbe hrot number. It is not too much to say that com parisons between the err all one- story office of 1853 and tbat of tbe palatial and modern built nine- story quarter-block structure of 1900, are not more marked than comparisons of the pioneer four- p»ge number with tbe well edited, progressive Oregonian of txlay. Tbe brains that made the earlier Oregonian a power in the then new sta'e still happily direct its business and editorial destiny. Since 1860 H L Pittock has been connected with tbe pa|>er assole, or part owner, during tbe latter years attending to tbe duties as pub lisher. H W Scott, who well de serves the title of the Nestor of Oregon j »urnalism, has directed tbe editorial opinions of the Ore gonian since 1865, with the ex ception of the interval between October 1872 and Apiil 1877. It i* but a just compliment to Mr 8colt to say that bis political ed itorials are keen and incisive, with broad grasp of public events and of generally juet conceptions 1 men the character of the public affairs. who control "While partisan to a certain extent the editor possesses an indepen dence <»f thought that does not de ter criticism of parly men and measure* that are not in consonance with hie views.
