K ansas C ity , July 5.—The national democratic con vention assembled this mori ing at 11 o’clock, and after routine work adjourned until 3:30 this afternoon. David B Ilill, of New York, in an interview today, stated tiiat he will carry the fight against the- insertion of a free coinage plank in the platform to the floor of the con vention. This is against what was anticipated, as it has been tactically understood that the battle of this question would be settled in the meetings of the committee on plat form, and that all would abide by the report of that com mittee. Aside from the selection of the vice presidential candidate this is the main bone of contention. K ansas C ity , Jul}’ 5.—The Pennsylvania delegates favor Hon Adlai Stevenson for vice president, and are work ing hard for him. It is said that the tide of popular favor is already turning his way. The committee on platform will make imperalism the paramount issue. The place in the front rank of the plat form is given to the subject of imperialism and questions growing out of the war with Spain. Fully one half of the platform is taken up with these, and the opening statement is of their paramount and supreme importance.
