- PACIFIC CHRISTIAN MESSENGER, FRIDAY,. AUG. 13, 1880 Wise College Boys. Young men, when entering college, of ten think themselves wiser than their 'teachers. They know what studies ore needless, and what aré helpful. A large part of the prescribed course they would gladly omit as dull, as unprofitable. Twenty years later, they look back, .with remorse on their youthful folly. Dr. James W. Alexander, one of the mostac- ■oomplished scholars of our country, thus refers, in a letter, to his fancied wisdom : '• Like most brainless and self-oonceited boys, I undertook to determine such and such studies were of no importance, and made this as an excuse for neglecting them, although the wise in every age have united jn declaring their utility. I was • ¡foolish enough to suffer almost all my pre vious knowledge of classical literature to leak out, and consequently I found myself a much greater dolt when I was invested with the titles and immunities of an A. B, . „ fhau When I entered a humble freshman." It required several years of hard study to retrieve his neglect of the prescribed stud ies. Young men need to have respect for the wisdom which has established a regu lar course of study? and which' has been justified by the experience of centuries.— YooZA’s Companion. r—Gluqpse, manufacture is making an ex citement in the maize districts of the West, the factory at Buffalo and its remarkable success being the prime stimulant. Half a dozen establishments have been planted within a month in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. Cyrus McCormick and others, it is said, have put 8650,000 into one at Chica go. It is to have a capacity of 20,000 bushels a day, which is the equivalent of 300 tons of sugar. A bushel of corn, cost ing about forty cents, produces thirty pounds of grape sugar or three gallons of syrup. This sugar, which costa them not two cents per pound they cijn sell' at from three and one-half to four cents while the three gallons of kyrup can be sold at from re KTTTrty thirty-five io Tdrty cents a gallon. This irttry pros new industry promises to dispose of the “ overproduction quertion, and it will, probably henceforth not be dheaper to burp oom than wood in Central Iowa".____ —Aman who firmly bilieves that a sec ond flood Will come next November, to cover the whole face of the earth, is build ing an ark at Helena, 'lexis. A negotiation is said to be on foot be tween the members of thé house of Roth schild and t]}é venerable Sir Moses Monte- fioie on the one band and the Ottoman Government on the other, for tbe cession, under certain conditions,* of the Holy Land. The Ottoman Government is al ready at its last gasp for want of money. The Jewish race wish a habitai of their own As tbe Greqjts; though a scattered people, '* living for-iLe moat purt in -Turkey, have a -Greek kingdom, so tbe Jews wish to have a Hebrew kingdom.’ * —Without moral principal education only makes a man more dangerous Jo the community, while at.tbe same time ignor ance is tbe curse of the conntry and aims a death blow at our national prosperity and life. Thistrne, what a tr< mendousrespon sibility rests upon those, not only who have in hand the charge and general over sight of onr common schools as guardians, but also those who are placed in charge of them as instructors. The measnre of ig norance and immortaliy that shall charac terize the next generation depends npon the generation pf to-day.—Air. —Until tbe rising generation, the young men and women of our land can be made to realize that the religion of the Bible is both a noble and manly tiring, that appeals not.only to their soul’s inner life, but to their courage, giving widest scope for ad venture, arousing all the chivalry of their souls to the noblest work of life in doing good to themselves and other#, one of the chief reinforcing causes of crime now in operation will continue in force. A boy who acquaints liimself with the Word of <}od, and shapes his life iu accordance with its precepts will not be like to fill a felon's cell, or dangle Lorn the hangman's rope.—Er. —While good men sit at borne not knowing that there is anything to be done, nor caring to kuow, cultivating the feel ing that politics are tiresome and dirty, and politicians vulgar bullies and bravoes, half persuaded that a republic is the con temptible rule of a mob, and secretly long ing for a strong man and a splendid and vigorous despotism, then remember it is net a government betrayed by intelligence, it is not the victory of the siniqs it is the surrender of lh" »cboo>»- 1» not that had men are politically shrewd, it is that <Ood men are political infidels and oOwards. —//eorye IFt/h’iim .
