In one rorctt least Oregon take

fair, which in sixo and importance is
tlrht among exjMisitions held on the
I'acific sIojk!.
The state fair, which ha become
the big event .-f the year for the
neotile of Oregon, will Uke .place this
year at Salem from September 14 to
19. At the fair grounds the work of
preparation has long since been
under way, and it ia expected that all
will be in reitdineea for the throwing
open of the gates which will mark the
opening of the most successful fair in
the fifty-odd years of it exjerience.
In the past two years the state has
exended large sums of money on
the improvement of the exposition

SERVICE IS
EXCELLENT
The Home Telephone Company
opened to the public their new system
Tuesday. There were eighty subscrib
ers on the line. The service was per
fect and everybody was satisfied. All
connections were made promptly with
little or no waiting and conversations
were clear and distinct. The long
distance line was in operation and
free service was extended to subscribers
to Tortland. All who tried it ex
pressed satisfaction with the prompt
service and distinctness of conversa
tions. In view of the fact that the
business on the Tortland end was
handled as regular routine business,
no soecinl arrangements having been
made to accommodate tho'free service
n Independence, continuation of the
satisfactory service is assured. After
trying the line and seeing the superior
service given eight new applications
-ere booked on the first day. the
excellent showing made and the
umber of satisfied patrons is very
gratifying to the officers of the new
company. With co-operation of the
homo people the success of this new
enterprise is assured. It is a credit
not only to Independence but to the
hole of Tolk county, bringing in
touch as it does, nearly 1200 additional
rural lines.

THE MATTER
Whv eo to Salem, Dallas or Port
land for an Edison Phonograph, or
buy from a mail order house, when
vou can buy the same machine from
vour home merchant at the same
price. When anyone tells you that
you can buy an Edison Phonograph
in Portland, San Francisco, Chicago
or any other town for less than you
have to pay in Independence put it
down at once as false.
The Edison Phonograph too fixes
the price and all merchants dealing
in Edison Phonographs can only sell
at that price.
Some houses advertise an Ldison
outfit No. 5 or No. 7 for such and
such a price. Now as a matter of fact
the Edison Phonographs are not
numbered but go by name as Gem,
Standard, Home, etc.
We have a full line of Phonographs
