Cou'd it be possible to awaken Independence people to the urgency of this work this commu nity could gather in a good share of the easterners who will come west to make their home in some locality of Oregon. A man to meet the trains and talk Independence and distribute literature is all that is necessary Let's get busy. The different Fair Associations of Oregon are co-operating for.i splendid display of products and great showing of live stock at the fall show in Port land, with the best races ever held in the state. All this has its part in the development of the state, by creating such an interest in live stock pro duction as will mean an ample supply for the support of the great packing plants now under construction in Portland. With the establishment, of8uch extensive packing interests will come the demand for better class of live stock. That is to say, it will, in a sense, see the passing of scrub grades gradually breeding up to pure strain and registered. Portland is undoubtedly to become one of the greatest packing centers of the United States. Hif&! All of $80,000,000 worth of wheat will come-to Portland this fall. It is true that some sections of East ern Oregon have suffered a drought but in the opinion of II. The crop however-will not he us good n last year. Vigorous protest was entered by the commercial interests of Oregon and the Oregon State Dairy Associa tion, against the adoption by the Pure Food Conference at Mackinac Island Michigan, of a standard for evaporated milk reouirine 28 per cent solids Oregon's milk is rich in butter fat owing to our climatic conditions, but abundant pasture means less solids than in milk from cows fed eight months in the year. Oregon dairy mei and condensers insist that solids should le such as result from the use of w hole milk in their product. The good roads conference which the West Side Enterprise has boosted for so hard during the last month took place in the Portland Commercial Club rooms Tuesday, and it is reported to have been a most representative gathering. Permanent organization was effected and much good legisla tion agreed upon. The conference was under the auspices of the Oregon Development League. Many nearby prominent people were preseut on the occasion of the conference. Considerable improving in the rut-i- dence section of the city is in progress in different parts of the town. There is one new house being built and an addition is being built to another while any number of houses have been repainted. Yes, Independence is pros perous. Une ttung, it is me oesv to n in Oregon and is situated in the best country where is to be found the best, soil and most favorable climate. $10O Reward, 10O The readers of this paper will be pleased lo bum it.t.ihaf.iBni.
