The ferry service across the river has recently been improved by the proprietor, Geo. Jones. The cable has been shortened thus taking out the slack, which results in a better service. Mrs. Guy Walker left yesterday for an extended visit with friends at Astoria and Portland. Messrs Cecile and Geneva went to Portland Monday for a two months visit with friends and relat ives. Mrs. Ralph Budlow came over from Salem Friday and will make her permanent home in Indepen dence with her husband, who is the new driver on the Independence Salem stage line. M. J. Guilliania of Reno, Ne vada, was in Inde(eiidetice Mon day. Mr. Guilliams i in thehoree business at Reno, where be has been located for some time. He is greatly impressed with the section of Nevada he lives in. He ia visit ing at present with his father at Monmouth but will return to Ne vada in a short time. T. J. Fryer, as is his usual cus tom, has about 500 sheep and lambs in various pasture near town. The splendid pastures in evidence this fall and the nice weather prevailing generally ia putting his sheep in splendid con dition for the market. Mr. Fryer has five decks of sheep and lambs feeding and all are thriving. The Farmeri Institute and Dev elopment League meetings will be held at Lebanon on November 6, and 8. The two will be combined and doubtless an interesting and instructive meeting will result. O. A. C. professors will condnct the institute with the league joining. Governor Chamberlain is among the prominent speakers who haye promised to be present. A. N. Poole and T. H. Halleck, comprising the firm of Halleck & Poole, contractors, of Monmouth, with their families are at home temporarily. The firm has just completed an addition to the New port school bouse which makes the building one of the best in Lin coin county. The gentlemen re port considerable building being done in Newport the past summer and fall. They will return to New port after a short Btay at Mon mouth. You are reepectfuily invited to call, inspect our stock and get prices. Sloper Brothers are operating this fall as usual their well drilling outfit and are doing a consider able amount of work. They con duct the -well drilling business as a side issue from their hop raising. They have drilled several wells to a depth of 450 feet but of course this depth is not often necessary. The boys have a hop yard blso of 65 acres and will increase it this fall by setting out 35 acres more, thus giving them a 100 acre yard. The boys are hustlers, and any one desiring a well drilled can do no better than to have them go at it. They have one of the I est equipped drilling outfits in the valley and are situated so as to do work which they can guarantee in every partic ular. 8. 8. Bailey han gone ieto winter quarters with his string of horses at the Albany track, which he has leased and will train on next sea son. John Kirkland of Indepen dence, is in charge. Mr. Bailey's stable includes Tidal Wave, 2:09, Vinnie Mann 2:11, Oma A. 2:101, Doc Mundy 2:27i, the great colt Seattle 2:25, and several brood mares in foal to Tidal Wave. The track will be plowed In a few days, the stables are being repaired and very shortly the general arrange ments will be up to Mr. Bailey's careful standard. The Albany track is in respect of soil and nat ural conditions a splendid track and in racing trim is one of the; fastest mile tracks in the North west.
