Upon re turning to work the unionists made it so unpleasant for the nnn-niiionists workinc on the docks that the latter all quit their jobs. A measure for the purification of the Orecrou ballot is being worked out by Senator Notting ham. The senator proposes to have unregistered voters mark their ballot and would even forco them to write their name on ballot as well as stub and in case of contest the illegal vote could be easily spotted. The senator holds it is not fair to place the unregistered voter up on the same footing with the registered votprs, therefore he would have ballots, where ques tions of legality might arise, marked in a manner so that they might be easily selected. Commissioners to the Alaska Yukon-Pacific exposition at Se attle have been appointed by Governor Chamberlain. T li e nninmissioners annointed are: E. W. Rowe of Multnomah coun ty, W. H. Wehrungof Hillsboro Henry E. Reed of Portland, xI D. Wisdom and J. 0. Booth of Josephine county. As yet no appropriation has been made nrnvidino- for the expenses of - CD M. the commissioners. It is said that President Roos evelt will devote a great deal of his attention in his approaching message to congress to the sub ject of taxing of the accumulated fortunes of the country. The question is being discussed in official circles in Washington and it promises to be a leading issue of the next session of con gress commencing the first Mon day in December! The proba bilities are.th.it no legislation will be had on the subject as it will be the short session of con gress lasting only until March 4, when the new congressional term commences. However, there will be much discussion upon the subject and the way paved for legislation at the longj session. The subject of taxing accumulated fortunes doubtless will prove a popular one among the great masses of the people. by which a people can rule them stives. To refuse to ratify Mr Tiounie's selection would bean open defy by the legislature of the will of the people. It woul bring the legislative body into a disrenute that would make it loathed and hated. The fair play voters of the state, even though Mr. Bourne was not their candidate, t a man want him named as senator now, and all such will hold in contempt the legislature and legislators that attempt to set aside that which the people in good faith and sin cerity have pointed out as their will, in the premises It, is not timely to propose a repudiation of Mr. Bourne. To 1 ' engage in sucn an enterprise would be to offer violence to good government, to insult the people of the commonwealth and trail the name of Oregon in the dust for the amusement of the rest of the world. Let Mr. Bourne be confirmed, let him have the distinction he has won, and let him go to Washington and do his duty there. He can do no worse, and he will surely do a great deal better than some others have done. Cofvallis Times. Will Make Exhibit., 0. M. Sanford, residing west of town, will make an exhibit at the Polk County Apple Show and pro poses to let people know that his exhibit is from Independence, and consequently has had labels print ed for his boxes bearing his name and address, also that of his farm which he designates Lone 0k Farm. In many sections of the county the custom of naming the farm exists and it is a good custom t" follow. Particularly U it a g.iod thine; to do so when a farmer is giving his attention to feome partic ular branch of agriculture like fruit raising, poultry, pure bred stock of all kinds, etc., so that when he puts out a first class article it becomes possible to associate it with the name of the farm and in dividual producing it. It is one way for advertising and the farmer backing up the name with the right sort of a product, whether it be fruit, poultry, live stock or any other article which he is endeavor ing to upecialize upon and create a market for, cannot help but profit) nicely in the end. j I by proving property for tins untie fce-i P.
